Nobody complained in Brazil 2016 when Hamilton had three 30 second leads over Verstappen removed by safety cars. Without the safety cars he'd have lapped the entire field.

Because the time he spent off track was 10 frames at 50fps ... so 0.2s ... hardly enough time to pass anyone
Fair enough if 0.2 was all he had. That's a lot lower than the average healthy reaction time.

One thing that doesn't lie is data, right?

Max was very consistent doing 1:17 high to 1:18 low in the last 18 laps with an average laptime of 1:18.013

He could only improve to a 1:17.524 and repeated the same laptime with 1:17.526 after a slower cooldown lap of 1:18.261

That was the best he could do and it's clear that he went for the fastest lap twice.

Lewis' fastest lap of the race was a 1:16.702 which was 0.822s faster.
Hamilton had DRS and massive tow worth at least 0.6 on his fastest lap.
So he did that lap also in dirty air? Even more impressive.

Is the next round that track that has an insanely positive camber onto the start, finish straight? If so wouldn’t that corner be murderous to all four tyres?
It's just a really long flat out right hander. Portimao only has a little positive camber on the hairpin.

I frankly cannot wait for Zandvoort, which I think is the one you're thinking of.
I don't think tire wear is going to be a big problem next race. Most corners are mid-low speed, with no harsh curbs. After all, it's a moto(gp) friendly track.
In an F1 car the left side takes a pounding, all I'm saying is save a set of new hards.

Imola is one of the few counter clockwise tracks, so not true for this past weekend.

Does anyone actually know why Perez was allowed to take the stop and go 10s WITHIN his normal pit stop? I thought stop and go needs to be separate and cannot he included into the pitstop.
The other 10s stop and go during the race was executed this way.

I think his penalty was for a 10 second penalty, not a 10 second stop and go.

Seems it was, but they did initially put it on the screen as a 10s stop/go indeed. Guess that was a mistake on the side of the TV director, but to my knowledge, it was not corrected.

I remember hearing it from the commentary (that it was indeed a 10 second time penalty rather than a stop and go) but I could be mistaken. I was working while watching the race.

Hehe, I was watching the Dutch channel, so I don't give any credence to the commentary anyhow - not sure what they said, but whatever it was, it was probably wrong. (the commenter was also completely baffled when Seb went back in a few laps after his stop, and it took him almost the entire 10 seconds to realize that he did have to serve a stop/go penalty =D> )

Depending on who you ask it's 0.4 to 0.6 ... but it def. was not worth the entire 0.822s ... so he did the fastest lap of the race without a cooldown lap after being stuck behind Norris for several laps, (ab)using the tyres trying to get close enough to have DRS and to make the overtake stick ... that just shows how well he managed the tyres in those conditions and how much pace he had even compared to Max who could nurse the tires without any pressure - however i don't believe he could have overtaken Max on track so he would have been 2nd irregardless of his little trip to the gravel.
I rewatched the race from Max's onboard. He didn't go for a fast lap. On the radio it was only mentioned in the second to last lap what the fastest lap was. Max didn't even respond and just drove the last laps without taking risks after advice of his engineer. So maybe this is all a bit over analyzed.

I still can’t work out why they didn’t instruct him to just give the places back at the time. By waiting so long and then only giving a 10 second penalty, he only lost one of those two places. Very weirdly handled. Also it sets a precedent now- just overtake whoever you like under a safety car and you’ll only get a ten second penalty at your next pit stop. Well worth it for making up a bunch of places.

Also, the timing of Vettel’s penalty was pure spite.

I don’t think the stewards are going to give you a 10s penalty when you consciously passing cars under a SC. Same goes for any action that is inspired by gaining and taking a penalty n purpose. Then unsportsmanlike behaviour comes into play and there are stronger penalties for that. One of the reasons Verstappen had to give his place back at the first GP from his team.
