yes, i also remember something like that....was it monza were he crashed in fp2?
Regarding Vettels gearbox and wall-touching. There was something a bit strange about how quickly he aborted that lap right after the wall. Either he notice very fast that he damaged something or he is nursing that gearbox knowing it's important for the race too?

If it was an old gearbox, I don't know... I just guess he would not have reacted that quick and darted into the pits like immediately? Just speculation on my part though...
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

Yeah I also though how quickly he darted to the pits... on-board didn't show anything on the dash... he just pulled in...bizzare

Can I just say "Good for Kimi?!" Top of the charts FP2. I mean, the guy is leaving arguably the top F1 team at the moment, poised to be the top team in 2019, and he's going to an "inferior" team because he just wants to race in F1. Hats off to Kimi. He just does his job. I've always liked the guy, but even more so now. As far as Vettel's gearbox issue FP3 will tell the tale. Does he risk a DNF on Sunday or take the penalty now as a precaution going forward?

Indeed.

If however he has managed to smack the barrier hard enough to screw a radiator but not damage his gearbox then he has worked miracles.

Why wouldn't he? It is Practice, it doesn't matter at all where he stands on the timing sheets.

Any team would pull straight into the pits regardless for a check. Even for much less of an impact no doubt.

The gearbox is a practice one. Not alluding to you, but Lewis made about 3 errors in the two sessions and Seb brushed a wall. All 4 were tiny errors. Don't get the drama about Seb. It seems that the media is absolutely desperate.
"Sebastian there's very, you're a member of a very select few.. Stewart, Lauda, Piquet, Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Fangio.. VETTEL!"

I just woke up, so I haven't seen it yet, but if he hit the wall hard enough to cause a hydraulic or radiator leak, I'd be shocked that the gearbox isn't damaged in some way.

I am not concerned about Vettel making a mistake. What caught me was how he brushed the wall and immediately darted into the pits. I guess i would have expected him to carry on, perhaps another lap, to assess how the car felt and if there was damage. But he did not, he got into the pits and was on the radio.

Of course, in hindsight, there was damage, so it was a good call.

The only thing i am questioning, is by his quick reaction, if that gearbox is perhaps crucial - more crucial than just one that is used for FP practices. Maybe we are all reading too much into it, but given how strong Ferrari and Vettel have been on this track, i would say that carrying any sort of penalty into the race would be a huge blow.

The Red Bulls have really good race pace it seems, hopefully they can stay in touch with the leaders long enough for their strengths to come in to play late race.

but the hypersofts run showed they are not as good as Ferrari and Mercedes
They were like 0.4 sec down on the qualy run..... and i was surprised about how close the Merc to Ferrari....only 0.011 in it......we might get a monza style show down =D>

Not likely, you won't be able to follow closely like in Monza!

sadly true
but atleast we will get lots of VSC and SC, which would make it an enjoyable one
