Williams FW38 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

They've been sticking to their own philosophy for some time now. From all the way back, when they introduced their tinny gearbox. Bulky at the front, shallow at the rear, with own, more abrupt, hot air outlets solution. The big spenders are now all on long, smooth side outlets.

I guess that you must prioritise with smaller budget. But to be honest, it is nice seeing different solution. It looks incredibly dull with the rest on same exact backend.

That got me frightened I missed out on a short Williams Nose  ! Great photoshop.

I still find the sidepods quite bulky to be honest; Williams really needs to find solutions on that front.
Isn't that a photoshop of last years car? I don't think this years sidepods are quite as bulky, could be wrong though

I think I have sew a bit of confusion, my apologies. I wasn't talking about the sidepods on that particular's picture, but really in general the FW38's sidepods.

For instance this picture:
Image
Shows that the sidepods aren't that heavily undercut at the broadest point. It'll create blockage on top of the floor at the rear. Williams has the philosophy to keep the top of the engine cover unobstructed, which does give benefits on its own concerning airflow to the rear wing. However, the floor yields more efficient downforce. It's probably not straight forward to move cooling from the sidepods to the roll hoop/engine cover. Maybe Williams should look into Mercedes their concepts on that front.

Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

What are the 2 nodules (humps) on the sidepods of the Williams? Just below the flow conditioners upper horizontal. Pretty sure last year they were used as a support for the conditioners.

I suppose the big question is will the car still chew up its tyres ... Also still haven`t seen any decent pics of the 6/7 blade wings on the inside of the rear wheels looking from the front. From the back the lower ones look slightly curved and quite sexy!

That's the Side Crash Structure showing. It is the same Spec Piece for all Cars so it can't be shortend to fit the Sidepod.

That's the slimmed version of their previous banned floor... But will that still be legal? Afaik slips are allowed but horizontal strips...?

Looks like it's getting hot underneath the Williams engine cover.

Looks to me like its the adhesive of the vinyls melting rather than the paint? So maybe not quite so worryingly hot...
