No harm intended with my comment either,it was rather playful so no worries. :P

As for Hamilton,i guess the wrong call to send him on SS again is what triggered the whole thing...He had to be on the knife edge doing qualy laps every time in order to build a gap...The conditions were tricky the degradation was high...Hamilton is a superb driver maybe a class of his own but its still human therefore mistakes can happen.

As a McLaren fan on the other hand i am more than glad to see the silver shiny cars being up there holding the bull from its horns. =D>
I agree, the more competitive it gets the better it is for the sport. I still reckon LH should have known better as a driver, been out on the track, an insisted on not taking the SS tyres...opting for primes instead...might have had a different race altogether 8)

Any comments on Lewis's penalty?

I am not an expert, but as i watching the race, just after the first pit stop from Hamilton to put the fresh SS i thought that the best strategy was to do the next 2 stints on the softs.I dont know if the team had available 2 sets of softs but that would have been a super strategy as we seen how fast the softs were.

I think was fair...Hard call though it was.He didnt actually see DiResta as the moment he was turning around Paul was entering the chicane. It was the heat of the moment and after all he accepted it and also apologized to Paul after the race.

That was the teams decision...I doubt Button and Vettel had any hand in making the switch to the harder tyres.

Great race,I'm pretty new to the sport but learning a lot, especially from this forum.

Button's command of the conditions worked out for him in an impressive way. Vettel, though not doing any one amazing thing, did manage to stick it out and work his way back up as others had issues, which I guess some (including me) weren't sure he could do. Alonso continues to show he can perform at podium level in all conditions despite some hairy moments. Hamilton had a great race up until the tire gamble went wrong, and did a decent job of making up lost ground but he was just in too deep after the drive-through.

Haven't seen anyone else mention this: In the interview after the race Hamilton said he was having radio issues and he could hear them but the team couldn't mostly hear him while discussing whether to use intermediates or not. Amazing how quickly that snowballed to take him out of the lead. The commentators seemed to know almost immediately that it was a mistake, I wonder if given the lack of proper communication, if the team realized how risky it was. Whitmarsh in the post race interview said half the cars had come in when the rain came back and they all went on inters, so he felt justified that it seemed the right thing to do at the time.

Can you imagine the fallout if he had clipped Button???

Just goes to show that a win is not always up to the driver but on a lot of occasions is a team effort, a driver is just a part of the whole. I agree with your comment on Vettel, but must add that he just stayed composed and consistent, he drove his own race a lost with a 'come what may' attitude....

These graphs are great, thanks for posting.

Looks like I was a bit hasty about saying Vettel worked his way back up. The graphs make clear that (even if the announcers stopped paying attention to him for a while) he was always right there... and he was picking up at the end (being less conservative according to his post-race interview) while the others were starting to lose time.

Also makes Alonso's performance more impressive comparing his place with those who did one fewer stop (though in Hamilton's case, he did pretty well with two more stops still).

Just taking a look at the points; in case anyone's interested;
Vettel 234
Webber 149
Hamilton 146
Alonso 145
Button 134

Right now there are 200 points to play so it's still very open. It's not possible for Vettel to wrap things up by Monza either. The earliest possibility is Singapore (race 14, 5 races left, 125 to play for). Do note that in all of my calculations I put him up has having clinched the title by 1 point at least; and I don't take into account countback as there are more races left than Vettel has already won this season.

In order for Vettel to wrap things up by the Singapore race chequered flag; he has to, over the next 3 races, outscore:
Webber by 41 points (13.67 average)
Hamilton by 38 points (12.67 average)
Alonso by 37 points (12.33 average)
Button by 26 points (8.66 average)

For him to do so by the Suzuka chequered, he has to outscore (over the next 4 races):
Webber by 16 points (4 average)
Hamilton by 13 points (3.25 average)
Alonso by 12 points (3 average)
Button by 1 point (0.25 average)

By Korea, it changes the picture dramatically, as Vettel just needs to "not lose" points rather than "gain points."
Webber can catch him by 9 points (1.8 average)
Hamilton can catch him by 12 points (2.4 average)
Alonso can catch him by 13 points (2.6 average)
Button can catch him by 24 points (4.8 average)

By India:
Webber can catch him by 34 points (5.67 average)
Hamilton can catch him by 37 points (6.17 average)
Alonso can catch him by 38 points (6.33 average)
Button can catch him by 49 points (8.17 average)

By Abu Dhabi:
Webber can catch him by 59 points (8.43 average)
Hamilton can catch him by 62 points (8.86 average)
Alonso can catch him by 63 points (9 average)
Button can catch him by 74 points (10.57 average)

By Brazil:
Webber can catch him by 84 points (10.5 average)
Hamilton can catch him by 87 points (10.875 average)
Alonso can catch him by 88 points (11 average)
Button can catch him by 99 points (12.375 average)

Now I hope I haven't scared anyone off here; and that you all understand the numbers. Cya in 4 weeks guys

What a race :)

Damn sad to see Alonso being all hyped up in the beginning. He had the speed there to challenge both Hamilton and Vettel but when Hamilton got fresh air he just took off ;)

Button, nr2 driver? Hell no. This guy deserves more credit then we give him i think.
He´s not the fastest driver but when other people makes the slightest mistake he is there to pick up the pieces.

No idea how Alonso got past Webber the last time. I thought he was seconds behind and then when i check the board he was around 7 seconds ahead of WEbbo.
The truth will come out...
