It's like a warm up lap from today. So slow in the corners...F1Krof wrote: ↑12 May 2018, 17:50Pole lap from 2014 was 1:25.232... almost 10 seconds slower.

Pole lap from 2014 is slower than full fuel race pace of these cars.F1Krof wrote: ↑12 May 2018, 17:50Pole lap from 2014 was 1:25.232... almost 10 seconds slower.

Considering the track isn't wet, he should get a better launch off the line with a softer compound of tire, so that could also play a factor. And I don't think the top speed is going to be a problem in the race, they have a very quick race car, I expect them to easily defend from any midfield team behind.Bill_Kar wrote: ↑12 May 2018, 18:35It was really crucial that Alonso doesn't start on S. Plus, with such low top speed, it won't be much of a problem for others to overtake him. Let's just hope SS won't fall off really fast, because there must be some pace there. If he manages to just hang on on first stint, everything else is going to be fine,
Actually, i think the general opinion was that all cars were faster on the S than the SS. Certainly the Mercedes too, and Toto did allude to it in a post-race interview with ORF. I am more amazed that Mercedes got to save an extra set of Softs, while Ferrari used theirs for a second attempt in Q3 and no one here picked up on that.
No way it's a one stop, 2 stop is likely fastest.Phil wrote: ↑12 May 2018, 19:02Actually, i think the general opinion was that all cars were faster on the S than the SS. Had Mercedes used the soft for their Q3 run, i’m quite sure they’d have been even quicker. Even so, they could just hang on to the front-row. I think some of it is down to their first run in Q3 when Hamilton had a huge gap and perhaps they felt they had enough in hand.
Anyway, i think Mercedes is brilliantly set up for a win tomorrow. If i am not mistaken, they have an extra set of Softs (new) while i think Ferrari dont. Many are predicting a one-stop, but if it does turn out to be a two stop race, having an extra set of softs should come in handy.
That's a terrible indictment of the state of the sport, isn't it?
Yes. These cars have so much more grip, so much more speed, helas also so much more disturbed air. The pre regulation change (2016) cars and their grip now suddenly looks like rollerskates. But the racing was better.Just_a_fan wrote: ↑12 May 2018, 19:34That's a terrible indictment of the state of the sport, isn't it?
The DRS zone has been extended this year so fingers crossed we see more overtaking.
