Williams FW34 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Surely there are two different chassis I'm seeing here?

The birds eye view looks like the old sauber config, but this view with the flow vis looks basically like the McLaren/new Sauber config.

Edit: Zooming on the first pic shows that the darkness around the back of the sidepods are probably shadows/reflections.

I would say that on the top picture the exhaust on the left side looks like there is no bodywork below, because there is a sharp contrast at the edge of the exhaust. Therefore it should be the same as the lower picture

It´s exhaust gas i think. Far away it looks like bodywork :)
Kind of disappointed!

Yeah I realised after zooming it was just dark shadows/reflections + exhaust blurring my vision

I have to say though, am I the only one who thinks the body work on top of the side pod is just far too simple?

No Sauber like slots on the front of the side pod to help attach air to the sidepod.

No "grooves" for air to be directed/concentrated towards the top of the exhaust exits as opposed to just generally running over the sidepods

Then again, they could just be checking it out and not fully committed. Not sure though. They wouldn't get reliable results without considering the whole package would they?

Do they have the time to be experimenting with things they may not end up racing with to this level?

The Pod Wing on the Sauber may be necessary because of the flow characteristics of their sidepod's slope angle. We know that the Mclaren exhaust relies on the Corriander effect to augment the exhaust blowing effect on the diffuser edges so perhaps the Sauber pods aren't attaching enough flow to achieve this effect without the little winglets.

Also, I think Williams have plenty of Thyme to assess this solution. They weren't a million miles away from this design with their original setup and they've had months to think about Mclaren's concept and figure out how it works. I expect to see this design become the norm up and down the pit lane if Wiliams and Sauber both prove its worth alongside Mclaren and its harder to ban than the ramp.
