I don't think it's vanilla. It's the same philoshophy as the RedBull side pods just maybe an inch or two smaller undercut.
I do think the car is a bit vanilla. More like like HAAS or AlphaTauri, the Alpine seems to be a middle-of-the-road solution.
It doesn't seem, unlike Red Bull or Mercedes, that Alpine have had the confidence to push their design to the extreme (presumably Alpine having fear of getting stuck with a dud design which is a dead-end, but those other teams back themselves). Which is strange for a team like Alpine who would presumably be planning to use a rules overhaul to create a car to win the WDC & WCC, but it is what is is.
It doesn't seem that Alpine were confident that they would select the best design of their own initiative, but rather they would rather wait to see the others and follow the others, rather than set the trends.
Alpine's approach still seems to reflect the conservative risk-averse thinking of a midfield team, as opposed to the "win at any cost", "push every regulation to and beyond the limit" approach of a team like Mercedes, Red Bull or even Ferrari.
Pat Fry:
“I strongly expect there to be many differences between the cars, especially at first when we see for the very first time how we’ve all interpreted the rule book,” he concluded. “Some parts are fairly set such as the rear wing and the front wing.
“I’m sure there will be some interesting concepts that we’ll see from other teams, which we’ll assess back at base after the tests and, equally, that will work vice versa. The intrigue is all part of the excitement when you roll out of the garage for the first time at testing
