Williams FW34 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Could this monkey seat be seen as passively adjustable aero?

Given that it's mounted in a way that would allow it to pivot on all axis?

For instance, when turning, the air coming in harder from one side could rotate the wing itself to keep it at the appriate angle for getting the maximum amount of air going over the maximum amount of the wing.

Obviously I'm not talking super flexing here, but could it happen?

Certainly a very interesting rear-end.

@Shelly or any of the other aero guys, can you explain how & why the vertical slot on the Williams RW is there & what it's doing to/for the air flow? If I'm not mistaken it's a one-off design for them as I don't recall any other team using such a design. Thanks in Advance.

My guess is that the slot would help the flow in yaw for the inner facing endplate (left ep for lhs corner) having no negative effect on the other side (right ep for lhs corner).

Renault R24 and the Minardi PS04 had similar features back in 2004.

The way the wing and endplate interact 'pushes' the air in the centre of the wing towards the endplates. These profiles help bleed some of this, and reduce drag, especially at higher speeds. This is the same reason we get the little cut outs at the top of the end plates behind the profiles.

This is just based on what I have learnt myself, could be completely wrong.

The monkey seat, I added one similar to my car about 2 month ago, which the idea being that it flexes downwards on an arm, allowing for a flexible aerofoil which could allow for reduced drag down the straights

Thanks Shelly & Tozza. I thought maybe they provided a function similar to the louvers at the top but wasn't sure.

As Coefficient said yesterday the FW34 really does have some beautiful innovations. They've obviously built a good car and I think many noticed even before the win. Many teams have copied their brake duct design.

Another question of interest, any benefits to the way Williams have their monkey seat installed on the car versus the more conventional way other teams use?

Photo taken after yesterday's garage accident - note floor and tea-tray design; chassis looks undamaged.

"Optimess" (and a laser warning symbol) on the yellow label: http://www.elag.com/

The tube visible in the rear of the floor will be the starter motor hole? Interesting rectangular slot surrounding it? Plenty of struts/braces around there for sure.

Is that laser somehow connected with wheel slip sensor, or what is its purpose?

Chassis may be undamaged in a structural sence. However its the wiring looms and any wiring that may have been part of the chassis during the chassis layup that may not be in great shape. For example the PVC sheilding ans such may have melted in a pretty in accessable area and thus make the chassis a minor right-off.

This is Chassis 03 that Senna used. Williams still have Chassis 1 that did all but the last pre season test and the Mugello test. Chassis 2 was in Parc Ferme so they have enough cars to race.

pretty sure not a single gram of PVC makes its way into a F1 wiring loom...You cannot judge from here what damage you got ..but fire extinguisher and water on open electical connections is sure not going to make the electrics and electronics guys happy.. and it´s remove and bin all that stuff to avoid further horror later in the season..but then, Bruno ..who cares...
