Ferrari SF21

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Nothing particularly new, but so many spare parts

Well it is Monaco, you're more likely to need them here! Does anyone know how the front cameras connect to whatever circuit they are part of? Only just clocked the knob like connectors for the front wing.

Is that a new floor or an optical illusion?

"Soft-Z" floor?

I think it's an optical effect, but I found this photo where there seems to be a kind of bridge on the floor in front of the rear wheels going from the more internal long fin to the small ones on the edge.
Here too, real or optical effect?

It does seem like one of the two new floors they've come up with until now.

I've gone back and checked. Ferrari introduced a new floor in Imola first:

And then in Portugal they introduced a bit of a refined version of that new floor:

From Barcelona on they've used one of those new floors, but I've not found a good quality picture to see exactly which of them, as both are pretty similar and only differ at the rear outer edge section.

Note: I've copied both pictures out of "aerofoilf1"'s comments. Shout-out to him.

This floor:

seems different from this (the second "new" one):

In Racefans photo it seems that the fin on the slide stops before the end of it.

I can find any clear picture but from what I can see it looks to be the same floor

My opinion is that the soft Z is just an illusion and you actually see the vertical fin hiding the sharp Z from that angle

Of course the floor they brought to Portimao was tested - to seemingly positive effect (each driver who had it outperformed the one who didn’t in free practice) - and then not raced, apparently due to only having one. The scuttlebutt at Barcelona was that they didn’t bring this new floor there due to not being suited to track characteristics.

All of which makes me wonder if either of the following are true:
a) it’s a high downforce but low efficiency solution (ie good for Monaco but not Barcelona)
b) the tests in Portimao gave more complex data than the pure lap times showed - ie they still needed to tweak the floor before introducing it and there just wasn’t time to do this before Barcelona

I read that the Portimao floor didn't produce the desired results so with budget cap in mind it was decided not to produce more than one and to shelve the floor for the time being

I guess we have to convince ourselves that the car, at least externally, has no changes in Monaco and perhaps never or very little will have in this season.

Maybe relevant to your question:

This is an Alpha Tauri front wing (couldn't find photos of a Ferrari wing with such view). It is visible on the left inside face of the cone what may be an electrical connector:

Within the Ferrari nose mount side there seems to be a corresponding connector:

more evident here, where a cable is attached:

The wing, afaik, also has thermal sensors for the tyres and possibly other sensors, which probably use that connector.

Thanks! That clears that up quite nicely. I had never spotted the extra connector there on the inside.
