Mercedes W15

Better front

Some water spray rolling off the 4th front wing flap around the pseudo-Y250 generating area:

that's reflections from the armco barrier.

The supposed vortex you are pointing out here way too far inset from the shedding edge on the front wing and I doubt you'd see it roll over at 30mph.
Yes, indeed, on second glance the timing seems to perfectly coincide with the car going over those road markings, others have pointed out the same above already.

Very interesting. Seems like different amount of water on track but W15 diffuser kicking it way more upwards than W14. By what I remember reading, the higher, the better when it comes to downforce, right?

The W15 looks smaller, the sail of an engine cover last year was wild.. so tall.

The front suspension geometry has been completely overhauled, the internals must have met the same fate. Lets see about their platform control during testing.

How is this section of the wing legal???
3.9
j. The normal to any point of the profiles surface must not subtend an angle greater than
25° to a vertical plane that is normal to RS-FW-SECTION for the forward most two
profiles and 30° for any other profiles.
How is that rod connecting 4th flap to the nose cone not more than 30°?

Measurement of angle of attack to any point of the profile

I don't understand the 3.9 rule, but isn't the profile too small to say anything about from the photos we've seen? Close up the profile might adhere to the rule. Just like your image, it doesn't matter whether the blue aerofoil section is 5mm or 500mm, the angles can be the same.

The “rod” looks like a strip of carbon fiber, probably 5mm wide or so in the same plane as the rest of the fourth element. It’s at the same angle as the rest of the element, just had its trailing edge brought significantly closer to the leading edge.

From what I see the rule states 30° to a vertical plane, the drawing you show has a horizontal plane (relative wind line).

I`m just imaging it as like a wavy lolloy pop stick attached to the rest of the element but at the same angle...

take this point shown below, it is more than 30 deg

Re: Mercedes W15

After reading the rule several times (and I`m still not that sure of it :P ) maybe it means that the angle must not change over 30 degrees accross the whole plain, and nothing to do with AoA from horizontal or vertical, but change of AoA accross the whole width of the element.
So you cant have a twisty corkscrew/drillbit type of wing at any point.

Think I explained what I mean :wtf:

This could go either very well and see them finally win races, or it could be a disaster.
They went down the downwash concept, but with a twist of their own, knowing that they can't beat Red Bull simply by just copying them. And the car is really aggressively designed.

As with Ferrari (engine cover swap), it seems that teams are now ‘testing’ during shakedowns…

They have always done that, they just didn't admit to it in the past!
