James Allison on F1 TV:
1. Red Bull
2. Mercedes and Ferrari
3. Aston Martin

He says Mercedes are slightly ahead of Ferrari on race pace and behind on one lap pace.
Is he actually following what's going on, or is he just parroting a gut feeling based almost entirely on last season's competitive picture?

I swear being an F1 reporter must be the easiest job in the world.
You need to look up who James Allison is :)

Going to go a bit crazy and say

Ferrari
RB
Mercedes/McLaren

Honestly from a data point of view I didn't see anything in RB that is more impressive than whatever Ferrari did. While the general vibe seems to be that RB has made a significant step, after 3 days it feels like Ferrari has made a bigger step.

Perez's race simulation were not very impressive, and Max didn't really do a full race simulation. Ferrari seem well clear of McLaren.

I don't see where RB are hiding all the time to unleash next weekend. They are not a team to hide performance. They will do exactly the opposite.

I would have gone on to say RB would win 24/24 if they had race pace starting at 1:36 and ending low 1:34s in this testing.

...According to Alonso, "the new car is better than last year's, that's a fact. We have corrected some things and made progress in others. **The problem is that the mid-range is at a very high level**". And it is especially the irruption of Racing Bulls, the Red Bull subsidiary team, that is altering everything. Getting into Q3 is going to be very expensive.

In addition, asked about which team he sees dominating Formula 1 this season, Alonso was very blunt: "**There are 19 drivers who already know they will not be champions this year**, that's how brutal this sport is". In case anyone has any doubts, Alonso means that the champion will be Max Verstappen, and he explains.
...

Not so sure about Aston Martin being in the chasing pack now, might be downplaying expectations though.

James Allison thinking they are close together with Ferrari does not bode well for anyone hoping Ferrari might shock everyone next weekend by being closer than expected to Red Bull.

Talk about "getting into Q3"?

Alonso is going to Mercedes.

Idk, I think Merc have been sandbagging quite a lot. Their long run pace looks a lot better than their one lap pace.

How about Mercedes? :)
Now you see why I don't bother with their games

They are faster than they wanted anyone to believe. Much faster.
