Williams FW30 follows typical design trends

Williams' new FW30 is a particular example for some trends that have been set over the winter. At first there is the attention that was paid to the sidepod panels. After their introduction in 2006 the designs have evolved greatly. The newest Williams iteration is very similar to the McLaren MP4-22 as it is one with the (closed) chimney and has a slit in the main panel itself. More rearward the flipup is rather conventional but shows similar thinking to rival teams. The flipup is now slightly wider and with a small slot gap.

Copying other team\'s designs is perfectly legal in F1, there are no patents.

What is not legal is possessing and using design drawings and other important information from a rival team, which was what McLaren were found guilty of in 2007.

what you can take away in your head is fair game, but in digital or paper form is considered illegal

correct if im wrong, also bmw copied ferrari\'s tyre covers, i think they gain two tenths per lap

Of course they do, when they see something interesting it\'s normal to develop and test their own version. Fortunately there is no patenting on aerodynamic shape ;)
