Rear wing copywork at BMW

By on

BMW Sauber are in trouble, and as a result are focusing towards quickly improving the car with as little effort as possible. What better was is there than to copy another team's working idea and implement something similar. BMW brought at Barcelona a major aerodynamic upgrade package, including a rear wing with the marked additional flap on the central 150mm. It exploits an idea from Toyota that is now also used by Ferrari. The additional wing elements allow for higher efficiency in that altogether, small area.

I believed similair was done in 1995 an d1996 by minardi, they placed an extrawing like this one.

Also interesting is the similairity of the pillars compared to the ones on the acura

"The additional wing elements allow for higher efficiency in that altogether, small area" - I don't really understand what this means. How is this efficiency being achieved?

Additionally I seemed to notice the McLaren front wing is starting to look remarkably like the Red Bulls. I guess they're missing Newey big time...

Many flaps are there to increase the bottom air speed compare to the top speed. Here, BMW has introduce a two parts "mini wing" in the rear centre. This wing should increase the speed of the airflow on is bottom comparing to the top flow and so on, the speed of the car. So, the top air flow of the major wing is increase and this might increase the airflow under the rear wing, increasing at the same time the down force.
