Team Surtees
Based in: Edenbridge Founded: 1966 (active 1970-1978) Principal: John Surtees |
John Surtees is perhaps best remembered as the only man to win world titles on two and four wheels. He became a driver-constructor in 1970 and managed to run as high as seventh in his first such outing, and scored championship points in his first season.
Although successful in F5000 and F2, Grand Prix glory eluded the team although the choice of condom manufacturer Durex as primary sponsor has earned the team a permanent place in Grand Prix history. The TS19 was the first car to wear the Durex livery and was the reason that BBC TV withdrew their cameras from pre-season British races during 1975.
The most promising driver to sit in a Surtees was Rene Arnoux but a lack of sponsorship forced the team to close before he ever got a real chance to show what he could do.
