Pat Symonds about Imola
"We are pleased with the performance of the R23 thus far," explains Symonds. "This weekend, we shall be using some new parts, including some new brake cooling ducts which are more efficient than the ones we used in Australia."
Because the circuit is quite even, it is hard to identify a key sector in which you can secure a good laptime. "However, the most important section is the two bends at Acque Minerali," admits Pat. "The first part is very fast, in fifth gear. The drivers have to break hard for corner number 10, in second gear, making sure they have good grip for the climb towards the Variante Alta. The drivers also have to come out of the last chicane for the longest flat-out part of the track, and also Tosa, which leads onto the Piratella climb."
Overtaking is hard at Imola, and the Renault team knows it. "The track is one of the most difficult in this respect," says Pat. "It will certainly have an impact on the strategies the teams choose. Imola is traditionally a two-stop race, and it might stay that way. Having said that, some may bet on a different strategy. From a tyre point of view, the track is not too abrasive and we use quite soft tyres. The fairly low temperatures however can lead to a wearing phenomenon which can cause some problems."
