McLaren MCL39

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Interesting detail picture there.

It can be seen that the two holes with serated spline internal are the location of primary spring torsion bars, yet to be installed here. These support the main chassis load in suspension system.

The main spring visible horizontal there, should be the heave element (as both suspension squeeze in, that assembly
pushes both end inwards) the spring and damping within to control vertical pitching at rear of chassis.

Behind that a cooler matrix (transit shield with blue tape) looks like oil from pipe size, possibly tge transmission oil cooler in that location.

I don’t know anything about suspensions but that looks a very robust structure and I guess it needs to be considering the loads but it’s still rather surprising

A perceptive view, nevertheless.

In effect, the design makes the suspension more compact to fit it in the space available. As example IF the wheel movement was 100mm (unlikely I know, for the incoming pedant :D ) and the system going to the suspension control element worked in a 4:1 ratio, then the internal component would move only 25mm in response (more compact) but slso "see" a magnification of absolute load in the opposite direction .... 100kg at the wheel, giving 400kg to deal with in those component we see in image.

As you correctly noted, those component are substantial, but not moving far.

And some info on RW. This weekend,, at least for FP1, we have same wing as in Suzuka:

Bahrain requires less loaded wings than Suzuka - Despite that, McL and Ferrari are using the same ones seen in Japan
Mercedes' top speed was the highest in quali; despite that, they've further reduced the wing load
RBR, instead, has increased it!
Many unexpected choices: expect some teams to change spec for qualifying

Supposedly McLaren have a circuit specific beam wing for Bahrain so I don’t expect McLaren to change the main element of their rear wing for quali
Just a fan's point of view

Very cool. Do all the cars have those cable-stays there?
