Red Bull RB16B

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The gearbox is narrower at the floor when the bell cranks are further upstream of the car. This allows more space on top of the diffuser for airflow. This will work well for high speed corner aero.
If the bell cranks for the pull rods were closer to the wishbones, there would be more structure downstream which make for a fatter, less tapered gearbox.

Re: Red Bull RB16B

Looking at the released cars with Mercedes engine, I noticed something.

Mercedes and Aston Martin have the bulge from the supposedly re-engineered air intake plenum clearly visible while McLaren has a somewhat more concealed approach. Considering the fact that these three teams run the same engine, there is more than one approach to work around the redesigned air plenum.

Now from the RB16B studio photos and the rb16 studio photos, the area where the Mercedes bulge is situated, the Red Bull bodywork on the 16B also appears more bulky than the 16 in that area. Somewhat comparable to the McLaren bodywork.

Maybe (just maybe) Honda has had their take on another air plenum as well. Since the new Mercedes air plenum was mentioned on this forum as early as October 2020, I can’t imagine RBR/Honda not knowing about this.

Mercedes is boasting about the gains and Honda remains tight lipped regarding engine gains

Just watched a video from Perez's youtube channel and saw the RB16B's suspension drop really aggressively like the Mercedes did in Monaco. The pictures Red Bull did release showed a more aggressive POU solution similar to Mercedes .
Look at the front right suspension at 0.22 - 0.26

Could you please have a look at the title of this thread. It is about the RB16B. Nothing to do with Mercedes. So a number of posts have been removed. If you wish to discus the Mercedes power unit, please use that specific thread.

Lots of new people here, as every year at this point in the season (welcome!), who maybe don't know the rules yet. And a few veterans that insist on forgetting them again and again ;-)

So, a little reminder to everyone:
To prevent every thread from turning into a mish-mash of facts, comparisons, wishes, hopes, jokes... about this team, and that team, and that driver, and that possible driver, then that team director, and the rivals team director... etc, etc , etc...

We ask the people to keep things on topic in "the technical sub-forums" and in a couple of places specifically: PU threads and very specially, the car threads...
Pretty much everthing goes in the general chat or the the team threads.

But in the car threads, please:
No speculation, no speculation about pace and no speculation about relative pace.
Livery talk goes in the team threads or in dedicated threads.
PU talk should go in the PU thread, but it can belong in the car thread if it interacts with other things, of course, it is a gray zone. The hypothetical 40hp are NOT a gray zone. PU thread, please.

I say this every year, but the car threads are a bit like the crown jewels of this site. Because they are so focused! And even then, they are almost too long to manage and to find things in them. So, please, only actual items in the car in the car threads, and focus on the actual car as much as possible. Comparison of other items to items "in this car" are of course OK in moderation.

When you joined, did you find that F1T as a forum was particularly focused, that the information density about the cars was better than in other places, that things got less lost in the noise than in other sites?... well, that is because most users know these rules and self-restraint most of the time! Please, help keep the site cool.

As a reminder, every user can open a thread to discuss whatever maybe needs discussing.

But let's keep these cool boxes that are the car threads cool and car centric.

Thank you.

Quite a lot of posts about a hypothetical HP gain, and about how many teams would be overtaken thanks to it, have been moved to the team thread.

Those belong either in the team thread or in the PU thread.

We all want out team or driver to win. But let's not wish it in the car threads. Read the opening post in each of those.

Great spot! I think it's a relatively easy way to gain low speed traction and handling for these boats.

You can see from Perez's smooth steering movements in the bends that the car is now much easier to control.
Probably the car at the rear is now much more stable on the track. Perez is very lucky that this has been resolved,
Albon could not cope with the unstable rear, only few drivers can do that.

And you can tell that from a promo filming day. Wow 😳

Let’s just see during testing. I have no doubt they try to iron out some of the instability but to somehow make that assertion after watching this footage is idiotic

You realise that most footage is from the RB15?

Presumably because a filming day isn't going to be pushing the car so any instabilities are unlikely to surface at this stage. Run 2 or 3 seconds off the pace and you'll be happy as you like in a car that, when pushed to the limit in qualifying, could be a real handful.

We won't know about the qualities of any of the cars until we get to testing.

Thanks @Justafan for the explanation. That helps me more than just putting the word LOL in by someone.

@Wouter, all the footage where you base your comment on is from the RB15! (only the pitlane shots are the RB16B)
