Michelin not amused:

There's a reason for Michelin not being amused: The FIA has no interest in ditching Pirelli, who is willing to put their reputation on the line to follow F1's stupid demands.

If I recall correctly Pirelli say they will introduce the overall tyre diameter to 710mm for 18" wheels --- even though many other categories use 18" tyres with 650 or 680mm overall diameter that is more similar to the 660mm overall diameter of 13" F1 tyres.

I take it, this is to align with LMP1 tyre sizes which have a 710mm diameter also?

As 2019 starts I'm thinking more about this. The total amount of deflection on current F1 setups is not insignificant but as has been stated, it's primarily sidewall flex. How much change are we really going to see? LMP1 suspension seems to offer a similar amount of mechanical movement to current F1 but offers less sidewall deflection.
Will we see extra development in wheel designs since the metal part is going to make up a larger part of the unsprung and rotating weight?

I'm guessing they'll probably adopt LMP1-like wheels, with a flat part on the outside.

You need some open space on the wheels to cool the brakes, once you leave that space, anything more will just create more drag and turbulence.

What I'm most interested about is the actual suspension development. As far as I know, right know most of the suspension travel comes from the sidewalls flexing, so when you eliminate a big part of that, the suspension is probably gonna need more travel and some changed concepts to provide the best mechanical grip.

That's a good thing.

It will make some handling characteristics under control of the teams by working with the suspension engineers and away from the tyre, which is a pre-defined component.

Unless the suspension is one of the parts the FIA standardise...

So, F1 finally made it into the 21st Century. Congrats i guess.
I think it will look great, and will make the 13" historical version look strange.

Edit -- Hmm did the sidewall height increase from the Lotus version to the GP2 version? The Lotus version seems to look better -- was it 680mm diameter which was increased to 710mm diameter (LMP1 size) on the GP2 demonstration? :?: In that case, the 680mm version looks much better.

The tyre tender specified a diameter between 700mm and 720mm. I think Pirelli said they'll use 720mm, but I can't find the source. Could do 700mm on the fronts and 720mm on the rears to give a bit better forwards visibility.

Will carbon drums/fairings still be used to fill out the inside of the wheels, I wonder. If so, there is more opportunity for brake duct bypass. The gap between brake disc and rim being greater.

Rules, budgets, and outwash aside, it would be a development area.

So they are going to give F2 a head start with 18 inch rims in 2020 before introducing them for F1 in 2021.

The car just looks silly with wheels and tyres that big.

Makes sense for Pirelli to get an extra years development - even if it's not F1 speeds.
