^ not read it as my lesen skills are not up to it these days.

However - this is a very Eurocentric forum, with a few of my colonial cousins and our far flung friends chipping in as well...and so the arguments and focus is all a bit...first world.

What could anyone possibly say to convince the emerging third world that they cannot have the power at the price they want due to the carbon control edicts?

I cannot see that a gree argument or position would hold any water at all in the face of the BRIC/MINT economies desire to elevate their status.

@ WB - you like to state the case - how would you tackle that? Can you imagine in your wddlest fantasies* that these emerging countries would even accept you had a valid point?

Combined with some power to gas capacity which will bridge longer periods with wind and solar deficits we should have an economicaly viable 100% renewable energy supply.

is that 100% renewable total energy or 100% renewable electrical energy ?

you say that wind turbine electricity in Spain is no longer a barely noticable proportion of the energy mix
I suggest that you mean 'of the electrical energy mix'
we have the same misrepresentation thrust upon us every day in the UK

the global average is 17% electrical at present (ie 17% of the total energy is electrical energy)
adding even the maximum possible electrification of transport, the majority of energy will be always needed as heat
you would need 3-5 times the above WB '100% system' to replace all fossil fuel ?
and 'renewable' does not mean zero Carbon or even low Carbon in many cases

the UK has enough coal for 300 years, but we don't use it because we want to be good Europeans
the UK also borrows hugely eg to give as aid 15 billion Euros annually to countries that subsidise their own fuel prices
coal can be gasified to allow quite efficient CO2 capture etc, then the (Hydrogen) gas used in combined cycle (efficiency 45%)
