It is more dangerous, plus chances are it will be difficult to get it to pass crash tests.
So we might see a fatter finger at the end that narrows at the waist then widens to meet the tub.

sector one is right on this one, the noses are usually realatively easily damaged indeed to absorb energy.

if you look at this wide nose and then think of the narrow nose, it would signify it's more presumable the
narrow nose is far breakable because it's much narrower. like a twig versus a tree stump [extremes yes].

I wouldn't be worried about any possibile very low 'sharp' fingernoses. even then, the angle and design would
make it snap off downwards instead of penetrate [it's not 'that' finger....unless some cheeky painter decided
to have fun with it].

The thing is, it is to break in a controlled manner. If it's too soft the acceleration of the crash will be too high.

This is probably a stupid idea but, when a nosecone gets damaged during a race, technically it no longer adheres to the regulations demanding it be a certain shape, right? Yet, if the integrity of the structure is still sound and there's no risk of it falling off any more and endangering anyone, usually they can carry on with the race.

Is there anything in the regulations to say you have to keep the nose the same for the whole race?

What I'm thinking is you could design a nose to pass all the regulations, but once in the race, destroy it somehow. Originally I had this image of the driver pressing a button and having the brittle end of the nose splinter into fine debris by way of a tiny explosive, but I imagine it'd be considered a Moveable Aerodynamic Device. (Or "MAD" as I like to call it.)

And anyway, that's just silly.

A more sensible solution? Perhaps a nose that's designed to disintegrate passively at a certain speed. Or perhaps a "finger" nose that folds under at a certain speed, maybe clipping into place on the underside of the Vanity Panel, which would now act as the "real", more efficient nose. All these strange asymmetric designs got my imagination going!

Stupid I know, and I know it'd have to only be unveiled literally at that moment in the race and it'd then be banned immediately after the chequered flag but, hey, 25 points in the bag! Would there be a way to do this?

funny idea, which actually makes me think about the solidity of the rules; if a nose is damaged during contact, but doesn't have the risk of breaking off the car - isn't indeed structural integrity of the nose compromised, and as thus per regulations, the nose actually should be replaced mandatory? you'd fix that easy with adding the rule that any damaged structural part that can be replaced during the race should be mandatory replaced?

Yeah exactly, perhaps they would say that it would no longer be safe in a crash and so they'd have to come in. But if the nose was designed and crash tested like that and it passed, even though the very end piece was secretly rubbish, the team could argue over the radio during the race that it'd still be safe enough.

The tricky part would be getting it into the race unnoticed. You couldn't test it in practice because it'd just get banned before the race and you'd look a fool, you could use it in qualifying to get a front row but then again it'd be banned for the race. Can't switch it in Parc Ferme, so perhaps have the car come in for a pit stop early in the race and replace the normal nose with the folding one then?

Guessing the total shift in Aerodynamic Balance ahead of time would be tricky to judge but, hey, just a thought. Loving the out-of-the-box-style thinking on this forum :)

Surely you cant have bits falling of your car, Your get a black and orange flag telling you to come in. Plus if something falls off or is removed by the driver somehow, it will classed as a movable aerodynamic part which is obviously illegal. So im pretty sure there are no ways around this one. Nice idea though

I love how you thought about it being considered a movable aerodynamic device and did not react on the fact the car would have explosives on it :)

I want to say that they would be black flagged almost immediately, but when was the last time anybody got black flagged in F1? Alonso should have gotten them in Malaysia 2013 after he had gone past the pits at the end of lap 1, and Raikonnen should have got them with that flat spotted tire in germany in 2005. I don't recall either of them being shown the black flag, but they should have been.

you mean the black/orange-flag (damage on the car), don't you? Black-flag is disqualifikation and there should be a warning before it. but enough OT =)

I think what your looking for is Rosbergs front wing from Korea 2013. He activated explosives to lower the front wing.

I have always wondered why some racing team has not tried to design a bit different aerodynamics for each car of a two car team. A "leader" and a "follower" so to speak. Perhaps strategic bodywork shaping that could be improved by a gentle bump by one car into the other.

I remember years ago watching SCCA sedan races at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin seeing two VW Gulf teammates run absolutely nose to tail and running away with the race due to much superior top speed.

My first post here. My first live F1 race was 1980 Watkins Glen, but I had been receiving them with original big disc satellite receivers since they were invented.

By the way I have unedited commercial free Sony Betamax recordings of almost every F1 race from the late 1970s until big dish satellite died stored away, not looked at in years. Anyone interested in them?
