James Allen said so many things before which were not true, like all of us he likes to speculate that's all.

I have a sneaking feeling all this is a rehash of the Autosport potugese article.

James just made a mistake, see Mclaren website:

"From the start of the 2015 season, McLaren's Formula 1 cars will race using Honda engines and energy recovery systems, renewing an association that became one of the most successful and powerful in Formula 1 history during the 1980s and ’90s.

I think they will produce a decent engine. As has been said - they have 24/7 to work on this until Feb 2015. 8)

Mclaren making the ERS for the Honda PU put that James Allen story in BS department.

That turbo that Mercedes uses is built by IHI, who has a good relationship with Honda and the same idea came from Magneti Marelli too,who is working with Honda with the ERS.

Also the point they can't change the turbo in time for next year is BS.All must go to bigger turbos(turbine) next year to catch Mercedes!

Just out of Curiosity, what parts of the PU can be OFFICIALLY changed for next season. I know that the teams can claim any part change which is based on safety improve/cost reduction. But am curious to know as per rules, what parts of PU can be changed for next season.

Almost anything can be changed on the engine for next year. With the exception of upper/lower crankcase: cylinder bore spacing, deck height, bank stagger, crankshaft: crank throw, main bearing journal diameter, rod bearing journal diameter, air valve system: Including compressor, air pressure regulation devices.

There is a weight system. See last page :

Teams still use those air valves for these engines? I would have thought that using conventional springs would have returned as the norm simply because of much lower rev limits and with that smaller pistons with smaller, lighter valves that don't have as much inertia. I'm sure the air valve setup with pump would weigh more than conventional springs.

Anybody have any real information concerning if teams still use the air system or now? Or is it all still speculation and the rule just remaining there from before.

Air valve springs are still used, the need for a pump has been eliminated in recent years though.

The Mercedes Turbo is completely designed and made in house at HPP in Brixworth, IHI are a technical partner.

I should of said technical partner.Mercedes was going to do it all alone but decided it would be better to add an expert in turbos(IHI).

If I recalled correctly last years cars and a few years before used a small compressed air cylinder to ensure pressure remained high enough. Can you provide a source of information that shows that they still use the air system?

It may be built totally in house but I would expect for the actual turbine and compressor blade design to be done by IHI, regardless of what Mercedes claims for PR purposes. Designing compressor and turbine blades can be as much work as designing the whole rest of the ICE and obviously a company such as IHI that is dedicated to this kind of work would be better than Mercedes. If they did do the design in house well then I wouldn't be surprised if they had a design team on loan from IHI

You are correct there is now small cylinder to maintian pressure.

A quick search on Racecar engineering shows it on the 2014 Mercedes:

BUT on 3rd and MAG is starting 5th, (Both on the clean side) so, if one of them manages to finish on 5th place (I think in normal conditions that is what we can expect at most) then it would be a great award for the team @ the home race considering the season for Mclaren so far (except the first race)

If the conditions are mixed though, anything can happen...
