Teams still use those air valves for these engines? I would have thought that using conventional springs would have returned as the norm simply because of much lower rev limits and with that smaller pistons with smaller, lighter valves that don't have as much inertia. I'm sure the air valve setup with pump would weigh more than conventional springs.Holm86 wrote:Almost anything can be changed on the engine for next year. With the exception of upper/lower crankcase: cylinder bore spacing, deck height, bank stagger, crankshaft: crank throw, main bearing journal diameter, rod bearing journal diameter, air valve system: Including compressor, air pressure regulation devices.
There is a weight system. See last page :

The Mercedes Turbo is completely designed and made in house at HPP in Brixworth, IHI are a technical partner.Sasha wrote:That turbo that Mercedes uses is built by IHI
If I recalled correctly last years cars and a few years before used a small compressed air cylinder to ensure pressure remained high enough. Can you provide a source of information that shows that they still use the air system?Facts Only wrote:Air valve springs are still used, the need for a pump has been eliminated in recent years though.
It may be built totally in house but I would expect for the actual turbine and compressor blade design to be done by IHI, regardless of what Mercedes claims for PR purposes. Designing compressor and turbine blades can be as much work as designing the whole rest of the ICE and obviously a company such as IHI that is dedicated to this kind of work would be better than Mercedes. If they did do the design in house well then I wouldn't be surprised if they had a design team on loan from IHIFacts Only wrote:The Mercedes Turbo is completely designed and made in house at HPP in Brixworth, IHI are a technical partner.Sasha wrote:That turbo that Mercedes uses is built by IHI
You are correct there is now small cylinder to maintian pressure.trinidefender wrote:If I recalled correctly last years cars and a few years before used a small compressed air cylinder to ensure pressure remained high enough. If the conditions are mixed though, anything can happen...bauc wrote:BUT on 3rd and MAG is starting 5th, (Both on the clean side) so, if one of them manages to finish on 5th place (I think in normal conditions that is what we can expect at most) then it would be a great award for the team @ the home race considering the season for Mclaren so far (except the first race)
