he coped quite well during first lap and managed to fight Webber for second position. if you consider that he can't see front wing from his position as a driver , and car responded well on a wet track , risk was right decision.
if you look what Kimi did: start from 10th, end up 12th after 1st corner, after Alonsos DNF ended 11th after lap 2, and fought all race to end 7th. where do you think Alonso would end up after two pit stops during first 5 laps?
