wow hamilton did a 1.21.534 on 7-lap run!! he was on the unmarked pirellis which are the medium compound as paul hembery said yesterday!...so either Mercedes is bloody quick [-o< or the others are just playing games!

oops...it was just now confirmed that he was on softs!!...still quick though!

So that confirms now that they can do a 1:20.8. Pretty impressive given that last year's pole time was a 1:22.2. (Admitedly Hamilton did a 1:21.7, but that was on light fuel).

Does anyone know how much Hamilton was using the DRS? Was he using it at every opportunity, or only on the straight?

Last year they used DRS without any restriction whereas this they can use only on the straights.

Holy cow, 1:20.8, on mediums, and with at least 3 laps more fuel than necessary in the car, that gets us down to 1:20.0 that that car's capable of (1/10 per lap of fuel, plus 0.5 for the tyres). If he's doing that with DRS only on the straights (which we don't know, this is testing), then that car is much quicker than last year's Merc.

Edit, 4 laps more fuel than needed on board, so a 1:19.9 is possible at least.

Remember Barrichello on the Brawn did a stunning 1'18"9 in testing, the fastest time ever made within the new regulations, a full second faster than Q2 of the GP two months later.
