McLaren MCL37 speculation thread

Oh and another one - I know some media or on here have mentioned some sort of thinner/shorter gearbox - it's not the case, the outer casing has been changed only to refine pickup points slightly for the suspension, there's very little difference.
Are the rumours about the Mercedes engine being the slowest and the cause of mclaren struggle true?

No, I don't think so, they never mentioned the Merc motor last year really, bar that the first one wasn't quite turned up all the way until they checked reliability

Mercedes decided to not turn it up or it’s a Mclaren decision, that could explain why all Mercedes teams were at the bottom at the start of the season

Or the engine was so weak that Mercedes was forced to tune it to max power to compete with the other

Hywel said they were very disappointed when they ran the engine for the first time in the shakedown

No, I posted in here about it even before the first race, and times thereafter, hell someone even from Mclaren themselves confirmed it here - it was just ignored by many because they wanted to shout and cry.

The engines were set to a known safe, reliable, map for the first engines, once those engines went back to Merc for inspection to see how much degradation there was, all the Merc engine teams switched to a more aggressive map. It was as simple as that. It was the sensible way to do things, it's also a common way to do things, just to varying degrees across manufacturers.

Well if the Merc PU was fine, then the Mclaren chassis was even worse than we thought. I'm not sure that's a silver lining. :?

We already know that Mclaren made a trash chassis

All the Mercedes cars had terrible aero and drag

I see why they did it… I just hope next year’s is the Mcl 61

It’s going to get as confusing as Ferrari otherwise, no one will ever know what cars what again

Personally I think they should drop the mcl and go with the M60 and so on it’s how they used to originally name the cars prior to the project 4 program (MP4)

I would prefer M60 to Mcl60 also

Nice nod to the history of the company though.

M60 just imply’s a motorway to me, like Alpines A52# designations sound like A-roads

Agreed.

I am not a fan of changing naming of the cars - no one really uses that name except die hard fans and it just makes it more confusing.

But I am not against "resetting" the naming and continuing with MCL60, MCL61, etc. in the future. It emphasized the long history McLaren has as a F1 team while being simple and recognizable.

The Williams was fast in a straight line so not suffering too much from drag.
