What is going on is no diffeent than what these two american heros did, athletes standing up for their personal beliefs is never a national embarassment, the embarassment happened long before the reaction... but certain people will never understand.

This site isnt a platform for ones political views, and the example used is an insult to the athletes of 1968.

May I ask why you feel this has any correlation with the 1968 Olympics and the French national team?
One represented the feelings of a repressed minority, the other represents the self interests of a group of overpaid footballers. The 2 are so different comparing them would be tantamount to comparing chalk and cheese!

The problem here does indeed lie with understanding, that just because the footballers in question (Anelka and Evra) are of african descent doesnt make this a racial issue.
At least the French have moved passed this archaic logic.

You know, each and every individual involved in the French fiasco is very wealthy, and has millions in the bank. They can choose when and how they live, and live in great comfort and happiness.

Fighting for social justice? OK, let's examine where this is being played out, namely in South Africa. This nation is just climbing out of thier dark days of apartheid, and steadlity embracing democracy and social equity. Yes, they have a long way to go, but at least the World Cup is supposed to be part of the growing process. A major event like this opens their nation to the world, and promotes all of the people of this nation having something in common, to bring the nation together, instead of further dividing it.

I'm quite sure most are familiar with that saying. This is the freaking World Cup, nothing, absolutely nothing is bigger than this event that comes by only every four years. Of the millions of kids that kick the ball around, they dream of one day playing for thier nation in the World Cup. You cannot aim any higher. Yet, the staff and players of the French team are embroiled in minor issues, incredibly trivial problems compared to the big picture.

Many very good soccer players never get the priviledge of playing for their nation in the World Cup, and to watch a group of self-centered individuals demolish and demoralize an entire nation's soccer image and dreams just because of minor personal issues is just unbelievable. Trust me, the Irish must be seething, because at least they would have taken the field and given their all.

Oh well, funny as it seems, every cloud has a silver lining. At this moment I'm watching the French team go down like a turd thrown off a bridge, but at least the host nation, South Africa appears to be on the brink of pulling off a win, which to them would be a very good thing.

See i can put things in quotes and bold too, but with even bigger letters so it must be more true than what you said.

It is just a game, a group of games played every 4 years... life existed before the world cup and it will continue todo so afterwards... please get a grip.

Who are you(two) to claim you know everything that is going on in the French locker room? Are you the flies on the wall? And so what if they make millions, does that entitle the coach to treat them like less then men? They earned their millions through hard work, that has nothing to do with this discussion. And those millions they earned were not from the french national team, they are barely paid for their world cup services.

Maybe they are not specifically fighting for social justice in France(they should be because the situation over there is terrible for "minorties"), but for their dignity as men, or maybe even just to not be led onto the field by an imbecile coach, anyway they have that right. You claim they are "minor personal issues"... what is your source? These are highly rated professionals... do you think they would put their world cup chance(if they had any with such a incompetent coach at the helm) and their careers(and personal lives) on the lines for "minor personal issues".

Please tell us all knowing one what is really the issue here, and also tell the french coach what the starting lineup should be since he claimed to consult a physic to guide him in such matters.

There is more than just the French team in the world cup. Their internal problems are largely irrelevant to the World Cup as a whole as they are fast approaching the exit door.

Anyhow, on more important matters I would like to drum up lots of support for Slovenia for their game tomorrow. With enough will power, we will help them, win. Seriously, our boardroom at work has been booked out for the "Slovenia supporters club". All new memebers welcome was the message that went round!

I read a good joke by an Englishman tonight about the English chances:

If that logic prevails Germany could win in 2018 and 2045.

I've worked in construction and been involved in many sports teams. Whether it's playing a big game, or being involved in a crane lift, you put your ego and feelings aside and perform. And if a coach or foreman yells at you and hurts your feeling, that's no reason to let the team down and become petulant. Do I know what's going on in the French locker room? Of course not, your insolent question is insulting. But this isn't about hardships, or injustices, it's just player egos. Whoopee.

I don't wish to come here to argue with a perpetual argument technician, the World Cup is something I embrace in a positive mood.

Here in Toronto we enjoy a multicultural society, and I was fortunate to be in a part of town "heavy" with Koreans. It was real cool, they were out waving flags, honking horns, and really having a good time, enjoying their team's success.
