McLaren MP4-31 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

car seems to be much better balanced whit this new endplate...what is interesting both Redbull and Ferrari once introduced this Mercedes style endplate also seemed to have a braketrough.

Breakthrough* sorry a pet peeve of mine

I'm under the impression that the new floor and area around the rear wheels and maybe any suspension changes would have had more of an effect. Obviously I can't be 100% certain though.

When I talked about their last endplate looking wrong, everyone tried to argue that it was good for some reason or another and that McLaren always knows what they're doing. Yet now they introduced exactly the change I "suggested".
I'm not saying this to argue that I have advanced aerodynamics knowledge, because I don't.
What I want people to realize with this is that McLaren's development isn't always as good as they can make it look.
If we're going to see them challenging for titles in the near future, I think they still lack a strong development path to do so.

You don't know if it was wrong or right, just that the new one may work better with other developments.

I'm pretty damned sure Mclaren can manage to test something as blatant as chopping a hole in the endplate before settling on the old design.

I remember reading that and wasn't quite sure what you were trying to say. Sorry Budd.

I'm pretty sure that front wing will change again for Baku. McLaren are tweaking and tweaking. change the front wing a bit, adjust the floor. Apply flow-vis Measure. Adjust for next race. It would be interesting to go back to Monaco and see how much their time has increased over when we were last there. Be nice if the rules permitted that with the PU, THIS YEAR. Well they will next year.

I guess we'll have to wait till Hungry see how far up the chassis ladder they'll have climbed. Although it will not be an apples to apples comparison being that we might have a 2nd PU upgrades by then.

The underside of the front wing gives a wonderfully different perspective. Fascinating!

I'd just like to say it's very unfair to say whether McLaren have adopted Mercedes/RBR/Ferrari solution or not for a particular part. They must have an overall philosophy and a plan in mind for every single molecule of air that comes into contact with the first surface of the car and how it moves across its length and off the rear-wing. I personally think it's misplaced to argue whether or not developments in isolation are going against the perceived developmental grain... I refuse to believe the men and women designing these parts are idiots. There will be cross-overs in philosophy and also techniques. Some are adopted, some aren't but unless they're developing the same vehicle nose to tail then it's more co-incidental if aerodynamic novelties occur on two different cars.
