I think that we indeed do need to take our hats of McLaren. Everybody (including myself) thought that 2009 would be a winless year for them, but I think in Hungary they did a fantastic job. I think the MP4-24 is competitive now, at the end of the field McLaren wants to be competing in too.
However I think that the win may have been Hungary specific, as in recent years, The McLaren cars have tended to do well in the extreme ends of setup styles. What I mean is that they tend to be very good at maximum downforce circits (Budapest, Monte-Carlo) and then in low downforce circuits (Montreal, Monza). Also I guess they tend to be quite good in slow turns aswell.
It will be difficult for McLaren to get another result like this, but I would think that Monza would be a target for them, considering the the MP4-24's semingly good straight-line speed, 10 km/h faster in the speed traps at Budapest is actually quite a big margin. I'm also dying to see the aero pakages the teams come up with at Monza.
I wouldn't dare dream McLaren has actually made a step so far foward that they have a car that can win races regularly for the rest of the season, like I said I think Lewis' excellent pace was definetly Budapest specific for the MP4-24. I think also that Martin Brundle made a good comment that the win was as much about good tyre management as it was car pace. And I would asoloutley agree with him, Hamilton did an absoloutley stellar job of managing his race pace, putting in fast laps when the tyres were working well, not going to hard on them too early so he didn't grain them up. I think that is what McLaren mainly did better than the other teams.
Hopefully next time its Heikki on the top step instead.
