He'll arrive too late to work at Mercedes. But couldn't Bob Bell always sit in the table next to Costa at the local Starbucks; and accidentally leave his notebook there when he leaves?

That's just what I was thinking. Sort of an under the table non-official meeting

W03 s cast is molded already..there is not much to alter in terms of general layout as the major bits and pieces are already in production.
The guys joining now will have an effect on hardware maybe in detail tweaks that are possible to do on the fly and the first major impact will come with the upgrade for the european season next year.
Of course their expertise will be invaluable to asess the W02 performance at the end of year.In the case of Willis he must have quite a bit of info about RedBulls technology as he was there not too long ago ..

With the new extended winter season tests Willis could have a slight impact on the direction to take the W03.

From what i belive, MGP W03-01 has been cast and taken out its mould and bonded to the other half of the tub as Mercedes use the top/bottom lay up technique. It was taken out the mould in mid/late September and will be at least 6 weeks to get it thrugh the finishing booth and get it ready for crash testing in late November at the earliest.

If it passes the tests, whitch will have a new roll hoop test (from the Webber-Kovalinen-Valencia accedent), id expect this chassis to be used at launch and for Test #1 at Jerez and Test #2 at Barcelona with Test #3 being used for shaking down #2 and #3 chassis. Id also expect this tub to see do the Mujello winter young guys test as well as being the tub that does the early season unbuilt T Car duities.

Wills will have little to no influence, he can guide and refine, but thats all, however id expect him to do as much as he can to the areas he can that arnt homologated. The MGP W04 will fully benifit from Wills and Costas tallent.

I think not a single guy has even prepared even 50% of the cars. You see last minute rushes or team even coming with old spec cars.

W03 is very much in its conceptual stage. Newey in case on Red Bull has said he has only started work on the gearbox & basic chasis for next year & will start more detailed work later.

Such it the case with W03.The car which will go through crash tests are basic outlines & have very little relevance with the finished product. Mercedes brought a complete new look car in Barca, new exhaust,floor,side-pods,bargeboards,front wings & a whole lot of changes & passing crash tests is no big deal.

The car so far conceptualized is going to be a very basic idea with some specific work in certain directions.Forget December, the car development race will go till FP1 in Australia leave aside all 3 tests. They will be many introductions & chopping & changing.

Besides Costa said he has had a talk with Both Brawn & Bell more than once & same will be the case with Geoff, with rules remaining constant both can work instantly.

I think Geoff will be almost fully responsible for the aerodynamics of W03,COsta might not have such a big role. But Willis surely will have a huge one. Does not it strike you that Bell last year was employed on April 1st in the new season while Willis is being employed from October 17th which is barely 13 days away.

We will be very much in the midst of the season with 3 races in India,Adu Dhabi & Brazil still being left. The only reason for such an early appointment without any proper "long" gardening period for Willis is to use him for W03.If Willis would have no hand in W03 then he would not have been employed at October 17th,in the middle of the season & 6 months before the 1st race.

With Costa I too think from Dec 1st to the run up to the 1st race he will have a hand & he is familiar with the rules & is definitely communicating with Bell on W03 giving basic ideas. Although Willis will join almost 45 days earlier & surely will have more role & effort. Giving Mercedes' achilles heal, the aero, employing Willis earlier does make sense.

Willis joining the team as early as October will have a big impact on the W03.The fundamentals of the car may well be defined but aero is something that is constantly evolving. Also teams start testing with last years aero package in order to have a constant against which other variables can me measured. It is not until the final test that teams introduce the aero package that they are gonna use for the flyaway races. This means that Willis will have around four months to work on the car before it goes racing which is enough to have a considerable impact.

No way have they got full scale models at this point. The car is still very much on the drawing board with 1/2 scale mock ups doing Wind tunnel tests.

Crash testing will be done on crash simulators. Stuttgart have got some of the most advanced simulators when it comes to this sort of thing and Brackley will be making the most of this. Only once the numbers stack up do they submit a car to be crash tested. Probably around January time.

Remember this year? Mercedes were still struggling in February with side impact tests for the W02.
More could have been done.

Complete car no chance.

Chasis makes sense, but can anyone post a picture of a barebones F1 chassis?
Most of it is carryover like engine gearbox etc no?
