We've been saying how a higher downforce solution wouldn't work because DRS drag reduction was limited in race use (unlike the F-duct), but KERS isn't.
Since the new rules McLaren always have been running more wing then others, with F-duct or not, they just seem to rely more on wing df then others do.

However, I can't for the live of me see the light in that. Sounds rather silly.
Anyone?

Is that DRS opened? Also, looking at the wing, taking the black camera winglet for perspective, it looks like the wing is set for minimal chord with DRS (i.e. vertically 50mm in height so we get 2 completely horizontal planes when DRS is activated)

The alternative is to have spare range in 7th when DRS is not enabled. So the car will trundle round lap after lap with sub optimal gearing, never hitting 18k rpm, it'll not be fast enough to catch another car, hence less likely to be able to use DRS, hence wasted gearing.

Of course its not B&W, reality is a compromise of quali v race.

Would it not be more desirable to maybe hit 17,999 RPM instead? I mean, hitting the limiter would probably mean you could have geared slightly longer and had it hit at 17,999 RPM so that you actually reach an aerodynamic terminal velocity, no?

Do you need a 7 speed gearbox at monza?

What will be diff in lap times between using a 5 speed and 7 speed gearbox at monza which has just 3 types of corners?

With the V8s it does make quite a bit of difference I think; as being in the optimum torque band will help you quite a great deal.

I remember in 2006 when they were just switching to V8s. Drivers were; at quite a few corners, not downshifting enough (e.g. they'd take a 3rd gear corner in 4th gear because they thought that would be enough; but when they went on the power, they found out the revs at 4th gear wasn't really enough; and they just couldn't get torque out of it. I seem to remember Jenson doing that a lot in 2006.

FWIW; I would love to see Massa and Schumi first and second this week. I would love to see Schumi competitive again; even if luck came into it. Felipe too.

Looks strange to me. Seems like the lower plate is turned 180 degrees around (like in the picture it should provide upforce :?: )

It's not a flat shape. It's kind of like.. a "curled" check mark when you look at it from the side. Look at the left side of the main plane and you'll see what I mean.

NB: "upforce" is called "Lift" :P

May McLaren change their beam wing or, as said by someone in the MP4-26 topic, is it homologated?

Wondering if they can run a different engine map which maximize power or not, that could compromise their braking.
