Red Bull RB10 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

@bhall

very interesting way of approaching the problem, i would basically understand that the less you disturb the air, making it to work for your own purpose that is creating downforce hence as a by product upwash only and not sidewash.

You can't create downforce without disturbing the air. Sadly, the method that gives least drag is the one that the teams can't/won't play with - the methods they do use (wings, brake duct flips etc.) make downforce and disturb the air a lot whilst doing it.

The open wheels don't help either...
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

that's what i said, the purpose is creating downforce that is downward momentum in equilibrium with reaction forces from the tires and the byproduct of this is inevitable upward momentum of the air what i call upwash, which of course is a big disturbation of the air. But you don't need to work the air laterally so sidewash is a byproduct without benefits ! Well that's not completely right because they use sidewash at the bottom of the sidepod and with the front wheels endplate for exemple to protect the upward and downward facing faces of the diffuser from the dirty air coming from the front wheels but that's the general idea. For the rear wing placed further up you don't need sidewash, it's of no practical use. PLus, you could benefit from an upstream sidewash that would bend downstream to fill the void created by the three plane device that create massive downforce at the rear, diffuser, rear wing and flap and because the relative depression at the back coming from this general movement is generating drag.
Most sports car use lateral air to fill the gap behind because to let it be filled by the air coming from the roof has a negative effect in term of overall downforce. I mean think of the general form of a car above ground, it's basically a wing facing in the wrong direction that is creating the opposite of downforce. A car that would have half the form of a drop of water at the back and straight sides like walls without bending would be a nightmare in term of downforce except if you work the air with a rear wing because it's the general profil of an extrados.

I've split off the "air to bodywork energy transfer" topic: http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewto ... 12&t=19178

It is a very interesting discussion indeed, so I recommend all participants to continue on there.

Sophisticated louvres I have to say. They very much resemble stacked wing elements. I wonder if this actually creates a bit of downforce on its own when in yaw.

Seems like they are not going to run a bigger exhaust pipe like merc or ferrari.

Mercedes have tweeted that they won't be using the new exhaust until the post race test.

Wonder what the Zebra print is Made of. Fur would be too heavy and slippery.
