Mercedes GP MGP W01

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I think single beam crash structure is suboptimal safety-wise.
It won't work well at shear stress, and if car actually rolls there must be shear forces acting on it.

Ditto...I am guessing its designed to pass whatever FIA test is performed on it. But I think it might be more sketchy in real world...

Any pictures of the rear wing? I'm expecting an optmized rear wing due to the new engine air intake.

I think they are trying to catch more dirty air from driver helmet to the airbox, so that the rear wing can operate in cleaner air.

Looks interesting, but I also can't really imagine what improvement that construction might bring. Cleaner airflow to rear wing?

That might be the nose. Looks same for me.
looking at it its pretty much the same, but it seems it raises a couple of mm.

Look at Schumi Showing how he monitors the progress of the assembly.
His also technical when it comes to his car.

I do hope this car can really help his cause this time. Hope mercedes did it right this time. although its not complete but clearly its a different car indeed.

They have gone ragical, and i think they could win with it!!!

They seem to have reduced the drag of the third most draggiest bit of kit on the car. This should mean they can run less rear wing and have a lower drag co-efficent figure.

Im looking forward for the times in FP1 tomorrow.

They did the Ferrari trick of adding a radiator vent out the sidepod and calling it part of the exhaust hole by virtue of there being a tiny slot cut between the "real" exhaust hole and the new vent. I assume this will become F1 standard unless the rules are changed.

The rollhoop/rollfin/whatever? Uhhh, interesting. I think this area on modern F1 cars would look great if the FIA rules didn't require the triangular section in side area for advertising. But the new lower airbox in conjunction with the required FIA triangle just looks awkward in pictures. Maybe designs like this will highlight how artificial and arbitrary the triangle requirement is and therefore help get it eliminated from the rules next year. I'm trying to be "glass is half-full" here. :D I am looking forward to getting more perspective on the rollfin when its on TV.

I like that a lot.

Interesting how the airbox is actaully not connected to the main upright part, its a few mm away.

Why would this be?
