McLaren MP4-29 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Best to gather as much info on the engine as you can while Merc are still being open about it.
That would make sense and would be a good ecplanation why they had next to no Updates besides the ones focused on cooling.

I'm very excited to see the full Car tomorrow, the Livery Preview Picture seems to have slimmer Sidepods and smaller cooling Exits.

Is that a venturi around the exhaust exit?

Edit:
Actually it reminds me of the air acceleration devices called aspirators used to rapidly fill airline emergency slides (those use an HP air source to accelerate ambient air into the bag in a similar venturi-esque arrangement).

In this case what are they doing? Using the energized air from the exhaust to pull a larger volume of (hot) air from underneath the engine cover into the wake? Is it an exhaust amplifier?
It probably entrains air both from within and without, aiding cooling while bringing more air down over the suspension fence.

Where are Mclaren's updates? On AMUS we can see a lot of pictures about Ferrari and Mercedes updates, but almost nothing about Mclaren :( Even if they didn't make it with the package for the last days in Bahrain, they have no excuses if they don't have a consistent update package on the car in Melbourne. You can't came to the first race, with the launch spec and only a front wing :(

You can see one duct go to the slots near the drivers head and another to the chimney on the sidepod edge. Still it seems so counter intuitive to have the airflow towards the front of the car for cooling.

OH my GOD :o
They still doesn't have no major update on the car. Look what Button said  "Friday's practice sessions are thus likely to serve as two unofficial test sessions for the team, with Button admitting "we are one of the only teams to arrive here without the update kit on the car so practice will be interesting"."

Where did you get this quote from?

edit: Button:" There were two teams that were really fast in testing - and we weren’t one of them. But we have brought upgrades to Australia that hopefully will take us close to the front. We are definitely expecting to win races this year. "

maybe he meant that they hadn't the update kit on the car yet?

Here we go again... #-o
Why can't folks just wait until the cars roll before conjuring up doomsday scenarios?

To the relief of Woking, the MP4-29 performed well during pre-season testing, although that early encouragement was tempered by the team running their new charger in its launch configuration on the final day in Bahrain. Friday's practice sessions are thus likely to serve as two unofficial test sessions for the team, with Button admitting "we are one of the only teams to arrive here without the update kit on the car so practice will be interesting".
