Its funny how if your English and your proud of '66 your a fool and need to let it go. YET, if your Brazilian and you mention 1970 everybody says "Oh yes, the best international football team EVER". If your French and you mention '98 its "Ah c'est vrai! The multi-cultural team that halved the race problems in France after you won it." If your Argentinian and you mention 1986 then its "aah when Maradonna scored that incredible solo goal in the semi's" (or if your English its "where Maradonna put us out with his sodding HAND!"
)
I dunno why it is that if you're English, 1966 counts for nothing, yet if your from ANYWHERE else in the world ALL your world cup success is applauded.
SHOCK! HORROR! GASP!!! We are proud of what our team achieved 40years ago! Lay off guys its not a crime, we are proud of whats been achieved, its history, it cannot be erased so try try to rub it out. We r just proud of the success we've had (just like the Uraguayan's would be proud of winning the first ever world cup, just how the french should be proud of winning the '98 world cup, and just like the Germans should be proud of wining the (I think '82 world cup) by beating the Dutch after going 1-0 down, and the Brazilians having won it 6times!)
While I'm my little rant, I also love the whole "it did cross the line" "no it didnt" argument. Maybe it didnt PHYSICALLY cross the line in its entirety, BUT fact of the matter is it did because the ref said so. He consulted his linesman and the decision was made. Every Team has decisions go for and against us.
So we were allowed one goal where it may not have counted (in a match we won by 2 goals
) but lets not forget Maradonna's hand of god goal, we can argue t was with his hand (he even admitted it) but the goal stands because the ref said so. Just like Deco deserved his 2 yellow cards the other day, because the ref said so. Just like the italians deserved that penalty against the aussies, because the ref said so.
It doesnt matter IF anything did or didnt deserve to be given...the ref makes the decision.
Being English I can think of sooooo many times we've been hard done by, as if it only happens to us. But I bet anyone of you could name a plethora of times that you feel your team has been hard done by. (what if Sol Cambell's goal against Portugal had stood....Monstro would have gone mental
)
One last point, everytime I hear about people saying "Leave it out '66 was 40 years ago" they always tend to be from a country that has as yet not won the world cup...interesting.
So to all of you who complain about us being proud of 1966
"...JUST COS U AIN'T WON IT YET!!!"
(unless ure Brazilian, German, French, Uraguayan, Italian or Argentinian)
And thats the end of my rant (please dont be too offened it was semi-serious at times)
Silence is golden when you don't know a good answer.
