2011 F1 car concepts

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

yes, it is not, but would that have are performance benefit?
of course it would, one advantage is that it cleans up the air around the rear tyres.
and to answer your other question, no it wouldnt bring the top 3 teams closer to the pack with out them, mclaren and ferrari who added them later were well ahead all year.

ScarbsF1:

2011 programme as the draft rules will ban openings in the diffuser. Although these rules are aimed at eradicating the double diffuser, the wording prevents 50mm openings in the outer portion of the floor (where the flat floor meets the diffuser). Thus open fronted diffuser are effectively banned as routing exhausts that far outboard are impractical. In 2011 downforce can still gained by having the exhaust blowing over the top towards gurney flap to speed flow the diffuser
So is this allowed?

no thats not allowed, unless the opening is the same as that used for the starter hole, which I think will be too small.

Is it a definite that no one will revert to the thin nose cone like Toyota's TF109 or the MKI RB5? Will we see those nosecones being used at Monza or Spa like in 2009 or will they keep their normal thick one's just like they did in 2010? :D

I believe they are not allowed to change the nose during the season.

correct, since 2010 the nose is an homologated part and thus cannot be changed, you can mold parts on though, as long as the crash structure doesnt change.

I wonder, wouldn't teams try to create a smaller front crash-structure with an outer skin for aero-purposes.

I was thinking about the same, but i think it would add weight, plus to make it lighter the skin might be too flexible?

Yeah, the weight may probably increase. However, I believe they can optimize crash structure for strength/less weight if they should not care for aero configuration.
As for flexibility, the flaps of the front and rear wings look thin yet they have to withstand comparable force.
So overall I would imagine weight penalty would not be that great.
Maybe the main problem is that the nosecone produced that way are less technological?

Force is one thing, but crash structures also need to be able to absorb a lot of energy in a short amount of time.

I think only ferrari have announced anything as close as a launch date. What naming scheme will they use now?

I remember somebody (Sauber?) announced February 2nd (or 1st) date debut.
I expect same thing as last year. Most of the cars would be presented within 3-4 days before first round of testing.

That's what Force India did. In Monza and Montreal they raced a normal nosecone with no bulge...
