No, Red Bull's race pace was better, but Merc's tyre deg wasn't that bad. After Silvertone we thought the same, so we have to wait and see.

I'm not sure Red Bull were that much faster. Certainly whenever Lewis pushed he was able to set purple sectors and fastest laps, except perhaps after Webber pitted for new option tyres. He was no doubt aided by running in clean air and not having to push every last lap, but equally Vettel had plenty of time running in clear air and wasn't able to make much impression on the Mercedes ahead.

The only time Hamilton ever looked vulnerable was in the lap before his first pitstop where his tyres were clearly on the cusp of falling off the cliff. But had Vettel set the car up for greater straight line speed, as Hamilton had, then perhaps he wouldn't have struggled so much in traffic but equally maybe he would have lost any edge he had in tyre wear.

So what happend at Silverstone and Nurburgring ? Silverstone was old tyres and they did 100% perfect, Nurburggring was 50% new tyres and they did bad.

Well, I immediately dismissed this, but on second thoughts, I think there's possibly a kernel of truth here.

As Pirelli had to very rapidly develop a new tyre spec, wouldn't they use the most up to date data from the most recent car that they had available to them? I don't think that there's anything nefarious - after all, new tyres were clearly needed based on Silverstone, but simply because their data was available to Pirelli, it seems likely that the tyre concept would suit them.

I don't see it as the reason for the test in any way, they just lucked into being in the right place at the right time (assuming the idea is correct!).

I'm sure Pirelli tested many other things in Barcelona and very few laps indeed with that base formula just for comparison. So the theory smack like conspiracy more than anything else.

I'm sure Pirelli tested many other things in Barcelona and very few laps indeed with that base formula just for comparison. So the theory smack like conspiracy more than anything else.

Precisely. Pirelli themselves said that they did some running to understand the problems they'd had but the new tyre testing had been for next year not this year.
