Do you have any idea how much money Honda threw at their team? It was comical how sh!t they were considering their expenses.
They were bound to get something right at some point. Too bad for them, they only managed to do that right before pulling the plug.
Money means ---. Toyota was one of the most richest teams in F1 when they were competing and yet they managed 4th best. That is not the point though. Honda went from 9th to championship winners in a year not due to monumental work but due to the mass rule overhaul.

That is what Mclaren has to exploit. All the loopholes that others might not have found yet to make championship winning car. If Honda did it then Mclaren who is a bigger and more historical name can do it.
That is pretty inaccurate… Money is almost everything in F1… The fact that Toyota missed the ball with a huge budget doesn’t imply that money doesn’t correlate to performance… The hybrid era is a clear example of that with the top 3 teams having the top 3 budgets.

Now is a new era and even though the budget cap equalizes the field, the reality is that there are still disparities in within the teams due to how much they have invested in their infrastructure, tools and personnel in the past… The advantages build during the non-cap years still has an impact today.

Not only Toyota. There are various examples in all of F1 history and also various examples of teams that were not on the top 3 in terms of money and yet won a championship or two.

I have said this before. I try to be as realistic as possible. You have to look at their previous performances and disadvantages to assert probable results for this year.

Man, if they go out there and win the championship this year, then I would be the first to celebrate it.

It's just that I couldn't realistically have had that sort of expectation going into this season, testing performance aside.
Like I said previous performance means 0 in an era of new regs. Case and point, Mclaren had the one of the best brakes last year. This year, they're having problems. I don't know why but it has to do with the fact that EVERY team had to redesign their brakes from scratch. They weren't building on a previous year.

Try not to carry over biases from previous years.

It feels like you are ignoring the points made simply to stick to your own..

On the contrary. He is right in some points. Money are needed to create the best infrastructure but they do not guarantee success. A lot of times teams that didn't have the budget of the top teams were able to snatch a championship or two.

Of course money correlates, as does talent, facilities, manpower and experience. And whilst probability rarely favours any outcome outright, it will always favour those with more of all of those resources. Of course sometime you can luck across a solution and it trumps everything, but in all probability, money will eventually buy you the talent, facilities, experience and manpower to make a serious dent in the championship, with "eventualy" being generally the worst case scenario.

But it was so obvious in his statements, and shouldn't need to be made explicit in any case, don't you think?

All I am saying is that when you have massive rule overhaul there is a possibility of someone finding an important loophole that will give a huge advantage that money might not cover immediately. Examples are many.

There is the possibility that Whales will evolve hooves and a chicken may be found this year that produces milk.

However, I'm not expecting to read it in the news. And yes I am exaggerating for my own amusement.

There is a possibility that anything could happen, but that doesn't mean latch on to it and hype it a bit as if it is an opportunity right in front of us. It is one of many possibilities. There is equal likelihood that we have screwed up and finish 6th than us finish 1st. But what you display is a Bias toward the outcome you would like more. I mean that's really relevant to anyone but you?

It is not a possibility actually. More like a fact. Many times a team that did not have the best budget got a championship in the large history of F1. But I really want to end that debate and let's agree to disagree.

For whomever may be interested, the following is a very nice article regarding a prediction model on Fomula 1 success based on teams spending / budget… I found it interesting:

Personally, i think it’s quite clear, that Mac were running very heavy on the softs and correlating data for the start of the GP on those tyres for the beginning of the race run. As they have little or no data on those tyres for long runs.

Also, i think it’s evident with the sector times that they were running on a very low engine mode. And we can be quite optimistic (I hope) for tomorrow.

There’s not been a single low fuel/high engine hot lap as of yet. And last year they were much the same pre race and Qualifying, hiding their true performance. There’s no reason why they would have changed this strategy and i think they are sticking with it.

They may not be top, but as long as the brakes hold out and they keep it on the road, it shouldn’t be as bad as some people are predicting on here.

My glass is half full. But it always is!

One interesting bit of information is that there average lap time on Mediums during FP1 (hotter and greener track) were more than 1 second faster on average that his run on Softs during FP2 (more rubber, cooler temperatures).

ANDREA STELLA, Executive Director, Racing

“After today, it looks like we have some work to do from a performance point of view, and we will do that overnight, trying to be as ready as possible for qualifying and the race. We needed to stop Daniel a little early this evening to investigate a water leak. This is nothing too serious and will be fixed for the remainder of the weekend. Despite this, today we could achieve pretty much all the programme we had planned. Following the issues we had at the test, today we made a step forward with our brake cooling, thanks to rapid work done at the factory to deliver new parts.”

I think any optimism needs to be tempered.... the 2 main men aren’t confident- Lando not even sure about the season on the whole
Just a fan's point of view
