Why the floor is so wide?
Part of this reason may have been a 'Tyre Positioning' issue, that neither of us has any idea how it happened. Must have gone weird in email land.

Sorry for giving a response that was in part a bit wrong, we didn't know! But thanks for noticing!

Thought that change was for 2013 like all the now abandoned ground effect and stuff.

Edit: Shouldn't the splitter flex upwards so you can run the front wing closer the the ground. And anyway there is a titanium bar between the nose and the splitter to stop it flexing now isn't there?

This may sound mean but please don't take it the wrong way...
I love the attention to detail and the concept of what you are trying to achieve but I wish you were doing something different and radical with this car. You have so much time to develop it and you clearly know what you are doing from what i have seen of your other posts so don't let it be a generic f1 car, do something special.

No the change is for 2012, or at least was written as for 2012 in the 2011 rules.

The splitter should flex upwards, and that is an easy amendment to make, but there is no titanium bar there necesarily. We are assuming it is stiff enough to pass the flex test itself.

The attention to detail is a massive part of this project. Our car is in very early days at the moment. There are radical ideas and features on the car, you just haven't seen them yet, and also, we plan on getting someone to partner us with CFD, to help us develop and improve on our design so we can actually do something meaningful with the project, and learn a great deal about aerodynamics, something I wish to study at University. This is a design and improvement exercise, there is no point going 'radical' from the off, when you don't know what will happen. We believe that this project can be something special, if we didn't then we wouldn't be doing it.

There is a big update on progress on the way, we'll post it here when we're ready.
We've rethought the cockpit and headrest, an almost done front wing, a new rear wing with some 'interesting' features, revised internals and some other features too.

Sorry bout the slow reply, been away for a week.

Titanium bar is a trade off of course thats fine... I though it was regulated but oh well...
Ok sounds fair enough just thought the nose could do with some more work. I too want to study aerodynamics at Uni and looking forward to those updates mate.

Edit: what are the possibilities for having a blown flap at the back of the diffuser (see the red bull car) not with exhaust obviously but with radiator air or regular air coming though an intake somewhere else on the car. I'm considering it for my design but i can't find the relevant regulations. Can you guys help (feel free to use it on yours too).

Just a quick update so you guys can see how things are progressing.

Exhaust system is setup to 330-350mm behind rwcl, which we are now aware is no longer the rule that will be in place in 2012.

A new nose is currently on the way to make the most of the new regulations. We've still got a lot of work to do generally on the car, there is also sidepods, and new headrest area, as you can see. New rear wing, beam wing etc. The rest will be explained in the near future.

Please comment your thoughts as usual.

Interesting... what is the sharpness on the second element of the front wing and what is the idea behind the bit connecting the rw endplate to the floor. Is the the top (horizontal) section of that bit even legal.

Sharpness? I'm not quite sure what you mean, but the second element is still not built, it just has aerofoils in place, for where we will build it.

As for the RW Endplate, it's a concept to legally get a better performing beam wing. The idea is essentially a 'frontal beam wing'. After looking through the regulations, there is a free area just ahead of the beam wing in this area, which we have managed to use to create what is essentially a 2 element beam wing, without them overlapping

As for the sharpness heres a pic to help me explain:

Yeah, sure you can use it if you want, as long as you find the right regulations that allow it.

As for that sharpness, they are just aerofoils put in place for where we will but the second element, as it is currently not finished yet

Thanks, as are we!
I think that we need to split focus on finishing parts and cleaning up the model as well as continuing developement on the base model.

We're also looking for someone to run CFD for us so we can meaningfully develop the car. If anyone is interested in that either drop a comment or send either myself or JordanGP a PM.

Many thanks.

Time for a little progress update!

Ok, in the last couple of weeks, we've teamed up with a forum member (Godsire), who will run CFD analysis for us, in order to develop the car!

So far we have run a test analysis on the front wing central section, and done a small initial study about DRS use with a low drag style rear wing.

All analysis was conducted at 75m/s, which is equal to 270km/h and 168mp/h.

Below are some screenshots.

Front Wing Central 500mm (HOMOLOGATED PART):
Drag:8.5N
Lift:41.4N

Rear Wing (DRS CLOSED):
Drag:217.2N
Downforce:800.4N

You can see the Downforce generation of the gurney tab, but it is very draggy! I think it will be removed for the next iteration of the wing!

Rear Wing (DRS OPEN):
Drag:122.4N
Downforce:311.5N

If anyone is interested in the full reports, PM me.

We believe this to be a victory for freeware designers!

CFD analysis was run in Solidworks.

EDIT: CHANGED PICS THEY WERE WEIRD FOR SOME REASON!

Wow that is very interesting to see, how did you manage to run CFD on that?
