The FIA certainly had a few things to say about BAR's split livery of 1999!

I have read that McLaren spent six months developing this new livery. If it hasn't got aerodynamic advantages (improved B.L. profile, for instance) then one has to wonder whether Mr. Dennis has his priorities right.

As the allude to on their website - its all for publicity. They were the most talked about team in 2005, with a spangly new paint job they'll make a media stir, been seen more on the TV etc etc, and so your sponsors get seen more often than those on the *yawn* boring red cars...
...thus sponsorship is worth more and so they can afford to buy all those new engines they're gonna need!

In a multi million corporation that lives off of media exposure, the way the car looks in the media is not something the artist draws on the back of a napkin. Half a year is not the whole timescale, it's taken at least a half year more for them to put the process in movement in the first place. It's not easy when there are a gazillion different parties who need to agree on it. Big businesses are inherently slow, which is the main weapon of small businesses.

Do you think there is a possibility that the reflective properties of the new livery are somehow beneficial? I guess it would reject heat from the sun a bit better than black.

Michael Schumacher takes out Kimi in the deciding race of the 2006 season and takes the championship. McLaren protest, but Schueys defence of "I thought it was a mirage" was upheld..........

I keep trying to like it...it should be stunning.

So far, I have trouble seeing past a confusion of shapes and reflections. I like to see the beauty of form in a car - this does not do it for me.........

I can’t judge it before seeing it on track and live, but what I can say is that the McLaren was one of the worst cars to take a pic of because the engine cover was a quite reflective surface already and more often than not the result of a side shot with the sun behind you was bad exposure with sponsors disappearing, that new livery will not make it easier considering that now the whole car is a reflective surface. For professional photographers it shouldn’t be a huge problem but for normal people on the grandstand, not having various filters, unable to move according to sun position or staying closer to the track, well, it could be.

RobMartin22:
They're [supposedly] a top team, so attracting new magpie-like sponsors doesn't really seem necessary.

bernard:
Fair point, but F1 teams are medium-sized businesses at best, and the successful ones should be well used to rapid progress else they'd go backwards on the grid.

Do you think that the Mercedes blow-ups are to do with cooling issues, then? No doubt the shiny surface would help on the grid.

The shiny surface would help to reflect all the heat if you are entering the MARS orbit in an MP4-21

Totaly agree, you actually get fiberglass insulation - I cant see CF being much different when it comes to thermal properties.

What can be said about the livery is that it is something totally new, as we can see from this thread alone its creating quite a stir! Excellent for the sponsours!

The thermal reflection of a surface has nothing to do with the material itself, only the surface finish. ie. black matt surface=good dissipation/absorption of radiation, chrome=poor at both.

Fiberglass is used for conductive insulation, not radiation. A guest mentioned CF probably having the same thermal properties as Fiberglass. Well CF is actually a fairly good conductor of electricity/heat, or at least the carbon is. The resin may not be.

Anyway, back on topic, the livery hasn't got the same luxury-Mclaren style I've become accustomed to. It's a bit too flash, and almost the sort of colour scheme you'd expect to find in a toy shop selling model Fast&Furious type cars.
