what was called WI in aviation was actually a mix of methanol and water
post WW2 there was (still is ?) an agreed standard mix (GM would have used this eg in turbo Corvair)

WI in 82 or so F1 was water only

The Saab99 turbo S from the late 70's was water too I believe

Yes, it was an optional extra I believe. Gave 20 more hp with the increased boost possible.

As a guess, the methanol helped to reduce freezing of the water at altitude.

Yes, the methanol is only to prevent freezing.
