It’s been an exciting Lois Vuitton Cup with all unexpected results that the Americas Cup is famous for. What I have found amazing about the racing is how captivating I have found the low wind races. Who would have thought that when hydroplaning monohulls and not hydroplaning they could be so exciting. Perhaps it has something to do with how evenly matched most of the yachts are in good wind conditions. In these situations the race result appears often decided by the outcome of the start (baring mechanical failure), much like an F1 race in Monaco is now decided by who leads out of t1.
But low or changeable wind conditions are nerve wracking and thrilling to watch. Everything can go wrong in a moment. Massive leads can be lost in a single tack or drop in wind. You don’t know the outcome until the yacht reaches the finish line. Much like a wet race in F1. Low wind conditions slow everything down and makes the focus on skill and technique. It’s exciting sport to watch.
Looking forward to the next races.
