what a nice discussion we have got here... Mickey_s phrase sums it all up..."Like most things I guess that the real life situation is much more complex than at first sight"... and that`s why si so complex to have all effects and causes considered at once...

Ciro, I think that shock absorbers with an external tank you mention are Oil-gas shock absorbers. Those are used in TC (turismo carretera :wink: )
Basically you have got high pressure gas in the tank, with some oil, in contact through the conections with the oil inside the shock absorber, in order to prevent oil becoming like "foam" because passing at high speed through the valve.
