Hi pipex, sorry I'm pretty new so don't really know you that well, but I'd just like to add my voice to the condolences for the sad and unfortunate situation in Chile.

I hope your government and the international community can aid in a speedy recovery from the devastation.

I'm glad you and your family were unhurt and my feelings go out to all those that lost friends and loved ones on that day.

Indeed a great tragedy, thankfully our Chilean co-forumers seem to be OK.

On a side note I heard talks about some changes to the axis of the earth after the earthquake. Is that true?

No one knows. I tell you why: a mathematical model has indeed predicted this event to have caused a displacement of 8cm of the Earth axis. The problem is that is so small that cannot be confirmed. Another side effect would be for days to start being 1,26 microseconds shorter.

A magnitude 8.8 is hard to imagine, it’s massive! I was in a third floor hotel room in Pasadena eight miles from the epicenter, when the 1987 Whittier Narrows quake hit! I came very close to jumping off my balcony on to a van in the lot. That was a magnitude 6.0 it felt like a train running into the building for about 45 seconds, with after-shocks of the same duration, and almost the same intensity.
I sincerely hope the people of the great state of Chile are spared the worst carnage, and suffering a quake of that magnitude is capable of!

Dude I totally felt the quake in Mexicali, BC. Mexico today
An Amplitude 7.2 who's epicenter hit about 150 miles from where I live in San Diego.
Although not anything close to what I felt in L.A. It is the strongest quake I've felt in San Diego and I've lived here sinc 1960 (with the exception of the 5 years I lived in Las Vegas 1978-1982.
It was noticeable enough to feel the neccesity to stand in the back yard untill it passed. Sort of a scary movie (metaphorically speaking of course).
