So in that case could these two teams now be thought of as having a sort of RBR/STR relationship?

Only if RBR and STR were at war ... the two companies are fighting it out in the high court to see who has the right to use the lotus brand in F1.

The current "Lotus Racing" had originally paid group Lotus for the rights to use the name in 2010. Then they went and bought the rights for the Team Lotus name, which had been essentially unused since Team Lotus went bust in 1994.

This annoyed Group Lotus, who have brought out the lawyers to play rough with their former partners. The issue is undergoing legal proceedings in london, but Group Lotus chose to pre-empt the outcome by creating "facts on the ground" through their purchase of Renault.

There is no relationship between the two Lotuses (Loti?) other than a lot of bad blood indeed.

That depends on whether Lotus belongs to the o- or u-declension.
o: Loti [lotī], if masculine noun, Lota [lota], if neuter noun
u: Lotus [lotūs], gender is mostly masculine

What a mess... I just have no words to express my disgust of this situation. I'm really sorry for Kubica being in the centre of that madness.

Agreed.

Personally I think it is a disgrace for the Lotus name, this sponsorship makes them look like they are some sort of constructor that cannot build things on their own and need help from an bigger constructor o get things right, it is just sad that Lotus has to return this way.

And my question that rises now is where Proton ever get the money from to buy themselves into an Formula 1 team, and launch like a million different Lotusses which all look the same? I thought Proton was on the edge of going bankrupt?

Furthermore the livery is incredibly ugly and that they even dare to carry a british flag on the car is an complete disgrace for that country, Lotus isnt British, Renualt is French, the only british thing is that the teams base is in Great Britain.

I really want to know how Renault thinks about this...

Team Lotus is screwed as far as getting sponsorship from Malaysia is concerned. And I doubt any big corporations will want to sponsor a team which is entangled in a name dispute.

Good luck Team Lotus..
