Well you'd get higher apex speeds at all three but you'd also benefit from a shorter braking distance in to Rettifilo and Roggia. Not sure how much shorter but even if it's just 5m, that's a car length's advantage on an overtake straight away.

That's the thing with higher downforce, you lose out on top speed (and how quickly you get to top speed) but you gain under braking (two fold because you can brake later with more downforce but also you don't need to brake as much because you're going slightly slower anyway and you're aiming for higher entry speed).

There will be a convergence between the top teams but the midfielders might throw a spanner in there. Also, teams might do a split approach within the team with one driver carrying more d/f than the other just in case - I can see McLaren doing this for example. What we will see is how effective the DRS systems are because the guys who gain more from their DRS should benefit more from the system.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

F duct could be used freely in the race last year but DRS only works when stuck behind another car. The cars need to be set up to have the quickest lap time in race conditions, ie without DRS.

I think we'll also see drivers opting with different setups. those who need a planted tail will go for more df, and vice versa

Indeed, the various set ups will be suited to getting the best lap time for that driver. Yes, those with a tendency for higher downforce will get more benefit from DRS.

My point is that there is little point in setting up a car for max speed with DRS if the car ends up slower without it. In that case the car would never catch the car in front, hence never be in a position to use DRS.

Even though the wing elements are very shallow at Monza, there will still be an advantage to using DRS, however it may be a question of choosing the correct 7th gear and not killing the brakes.

On the flip side of this, can DRS be used at Monaco?

Will it matter much? I don't think it would actually.

I read somewhere here it will not be in use the whole weekend at Monaco.
They wouldn't benefit that much, but I think they are not using it for safety reasons.
Stalling wing + no run-off zones.
On second thought it would be possible behind the tunnel section, because there is space for those who miss the chicane.

Quite a discussion I started here about the DRS in Monza. Should I edit the first post to be a starting post for a Monza GP 2011 thread? Will be an interesting topic in the Monza thread in August anyway.

Thats not possible
as the DRS cuts itself off automatically when a car hits the brake

Some other suggestions wont work either like Very high d/f and DRS use to counter that will only work for Quly, but in the race they will be sitting ducks

remember its not like F duct which, DRS can only be used freely in quly

thats completely wrong
As in quly they can open it at every possible small straights, that should give atleast 0.2 to 0.3 seconds advantage.

No run offs is unique for Monaco,
You can only win there if u r capable of running right on the limit and not crash
....thats why u see great drivers having higher number of wins there ( Senna, Schumy )
So running the DRS and kissing barrier will give u the ultimate laptime there.

At Monaco, they need all the downforce available. I think using it would be extremely dangerous anywhere on the circuit. Maybe the tunnel but I can't think of anywhere that would be safe enough.

Not to mention that there is barely enough width to pass

I can think of 4 places
1. Start finish straight
2. few meters up to the casino square
3. in the tunnel
4. after the chicane

The only place I can think of is the run up the hill at Beau Rivage as it's close enough to being straight for an F1 car. But it's quite short and there's no overtaking opportunity so of little overall benefit in using DRS.

The tunnel would be "interesting" - consider the shunts in the last couple of years where drivers have been slightly offline etc through the tunnel.

I don't see the DRS realistically being used at at Monaco (although no doubt they'll end up with a silly little run of it on the pit straight in front of the royal box just for show...)

Hence the winking smile and the mention of "rumor"...
