You could do something similar with an electric hybrid Andy.
Electric hybrid doesn't have exhaust gases to blow the diffuser, turbine engine does
Of course but you could use an ERS-H motor generator solely in motor form to blow from the turbo no matter what engine revs you had. No lag and plenty of air for the diffuser at all times and with much lower weight penalty.
Super caps for E storage and a ERS-K in generator mode (overrun) only.
I feel like there's a point in here where andylaurence, being of an understated nature did not make clear that what he was talking about was not hypothetical. The picture is of the hot blown diffuser of Nic Mann's 'Manic Beattie' (which as it happens, i posted earlier) which uses the turbine starter unit or 'APU' out of a helicopter to run the turbocharger. It's sort of like a Napier Nomad that way, but with a much higher mass flow than a normally turbocharged Ford BDA could ever produce(even in your F1-esque hypothetical scenario autogyro), so Nic put it to use blowing the whole diffuser which is the full width of the car.

So make sure the turbo compressor is large enough for purpose and bleed the excess cold air to the diffuser with the turbines hot air.
Just balance turbo driven rpm to the available electrical energy from ER-K/capacitors to keep the rpm constant.
If you want more hot air to the diffuser burn some more liquid fuel in the turbo outlet.
Then there will always be sufficient boost pressure available.

More like a RR Crecy sleeve valved through scavange two stroke that used nearly one third of its thrust from the exhaust.
The Crecy developed close to 4000hp the Nomad only 3000hp with huge complication.
The Crecy used no hot turbine and should have been the development direction for performance ICE engines after WW2.

Apart from you've just doubled the cost of the car for the same effect. And probably made it heavier too.

I do not see how you come to that conclusion.

You already have a turbo.
You add a M/G-K.
You add an electric motor to the turbo.
Capacitor storage and control unit.

You gain much higher D/F, electrical energy to the power train and constant high power boost.
Where is the down side?

As you guys are a bit offtopic atm, I want to say something about WTAC (World Time Attack Championship).

Last year, the "Project NEMO" Lancer EVO (winning in 2012) was beaten by the Tilton Interiors Racing EVO.
The aerodynamics were made by Body and aerodynamics specialist VOLTEX in Japan.

here are some pictures:

Now the interesting part.

this weekend there is a festival in Australia from TopGear.

And guess what?! They want to let the best cars battle against each others.
The lineup is:
Formula1: RedBull Renault (RB7 I think)
GT3 Series: Mercedes-AMG SLS GT3
V8 Supercars: Mercedes-benz E63 AMG V8 Supercar
WRC: World Ralley CAR (Pictured is Toyota)
Superbike: Ducati Superbike

They are going for best time.
And guess what. The WTAC Tilton Evo is allowed to use Slicks (in TimeAttack you normally have to use Road Tires!)

This will be very interesting!
And like they said on their page about F1 and their car:
" we won't get near them but people will be surprised"

Let's hope so!

what sort of track will they run? I might have seen it on youtube with Webber, Stoner and maybe Whincup doing laps around an Australian circuit.

they were running on Sydney Motorsport Park.
Ricciardo set a new all time lap record (1:11:2330min).
thats 13 sec. faster then the record before (1:24:xx min) from Tilton Evo last year @ World Time Attack Challange.
You have to know that they are only allowed to use road tires on WTAC.

Unfortunately the Tilton Evo wasn't able to use slicks this time due to a shipment problem of the ordered slicks from overseas!

It`s still impressive that the Evo run faster with it`s road tires than the SLS GT3 with Slicks. (1:27:5 min)

Yea well, it has at least 50% more power, "road tyres" that are pretty much the best you can have for a road tyre (did you check what a Yokohama A050 is? not far off a race tyre), and no restriction anything (did you check how restrictive the GT3 category is?). Everybody with money can beat a GT3 in an unlimited class, but try to do it with GT3 regulations and I will take my hat off!
