I have an idea to fix this. Make the final race double points, ok agreed.
Then go ahead and make all the other races double points as well. There, problem solved
Education is that which allows a nation free, independent, reputable life, and function as a high society; or it condemns it to captivity and poverty.

20 cars, 20 races. Drivers are not employed by the teams, but rather by Formula one, they get at least a minimum retainer to cover costs of travel and a tidy income. Each race, they switch cars and crews. Current points apply. Cars are set up with common controls, so no learning curve regarding that. They get paid extra on finishing results and any personal sponsorship they can gin up. Teams compete in their own championship, as per now. They hold their own sponsorship, and get paid on finishing results. Seems as goofy as double points for the last race.

First I thought that its some idea Bernie came up with (like medal system) ,be now seeing FIA ratify the system is just embarrassing as a F1 fan. Better to hold a free 20th race or half fee it than get double points.
What they should do is once the season is over have a world wide broadcast (milk it for 1 hour so the FIA can really gouge the TV partners and sponsors) and have a prize wheel with the 20 races listed on it. Have Bernie spin the wheel to see which race gets the double point bonus and adjust the standings accordingly.
Hell, using a table tennis ball draw would be just as good. Just don't let Newey near the table tennis balls!
What has happened to "may the best win"? I can understand the desire to make the championships go to the last race, because those seasons where the championship has been decided in the last race, have usually been very exciting all the way. But that is definitely a result of close competition in the first place. In the event where one competitor is clearly better than the rest, it is pointless to try to manipulate the points so that the best competitor might not win after all. And when you think about it, that is exactly what they are trying to do. This is not going to affect the competitiveness of anyone, it is only an attempt to prevent the best competitor of winning the championship before the last race, which means that it is less likely that the best will win. You can of course always say that as long as the rules are the same for everyone, the winner will always be the one who did best. But in this case, coincidence will play a bigger part than before, making it less likely that the best one wins. In my opinion, if one competitor is best by a large margine, he should win the championship by a large margine. Any attempt to prevent that, would only serve to ruin the sport in the sense that it should be a competition that rewards the best.
Mathematically, giving douple points for the last race is the same as only giving half the points for all the other races. One could argue that this is therefore a step half-way towards the situation where only the last race counts towards the championship. Then the championship would always be decided in the final race with everyone having the same chance to clinch the title. A good thing in itself maybe, but still quite rediculous if you want the best to win. Barrichello world champion in 2003. Montoya in 2004 and Massa in 2006. Ok, we are not there yet, but we are actually half-way there in a way, mathematically speaking.
By the way, in 2005, the championship would have been decided in the final race with double points for the last race. Before the last race, Alonso 123 points, and Raikkonen was only 19 points behind, with 104 points.
