I did some calculations on the FP2 long runs today. These are the lap times (in seconds), ordered from lowest to highest median lap times. First on the Soft tyre:

Code: Select all

ROS	11	84.43	86.22	84.89	84.98	0.569

Rosberg's pace on the Super Soft tyre is scary! The deg rate on Verstappen's run was almost twice as much to get within half a second of Rosberg's pace. Not looking good. Ferrari were worse. I think McLaren will be fighting with Williams on genuine pace this weekend.

Pole in the 1:18s? :D

Ferrari stints were longer. Any chance they could match RB if stints were equal length?

It's possible, if I'm not wrong, Vettel did his run on 8 lap old SS vs the RB drivers did them on 5-lap old ones. So in equal terms, Vettel can match Ric's pace, I guess?

Looks like Vettel and Ericsson are set for 5 place grid penalties for gearbox replacements.

"Hungarian GP: Drivers face return-to-pit instruction under new radio rules".
Now the teams need a simulator to train drivers on responses to problems. Or maybe: "Siri, my car sticks in 7th gear and won't go, what should I do?" :)

Merc mastaered the tyres masterfully, untouchable even in Hungary in the heat... damn!
Longruns 1 sec, shortruns 1Sec , so unless technical or red mist DNF.. I see no chance of any other drivers winning this than merc boys.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRGH!

You didn't read the FIA statement, it says that since Vettel has used a spare gearbox in Silverstone in Hungary he has the right to use a new gearbox with no penalties.

You don't sound very optimistic.
So, has Ferrari lost race pace over advantage over rb? Any reason why this track should suit rb better?

Ferrari was only faster(at least Schumi) during the last part of the championship. Renault was clearly the best car in the first half, then a more balanced competition and finally a stronger Ferrari(not with rain, where they s*cked).
To be accurate: the Bridgestone's sucked in the rain. Michael's drive in China was incredible and streets ahead of any other Bridgestone runner; even in Hungary he almost pulled a decent result out of the bag (despite no pace at all in the wet) but threw it away by defending a bit too aggressively/not playing the percentages.
Exactly, the Bridgestone in general sucked in rain. And In China Michael drove very well but he was lucky enough because Alonso had a bad set of tyres. He was pulling away before that.
Sure, without Renault issues (several of them) Alonso had it in the bag.

But it was in qualifying sixth - streets ahead of all other Bridgestone runners - and beating all the other Michelin runners who didn't have problems, that he completely maximised everything. And it's in winning the ones you have no right to win that the greats show themselves.
