A different theory could be he doesn't want to give Rosberg his data or does Rosberg have the upper hand?
Is there any reports of Hamilton struggling with his balance/setup?
If it isn't that he's just not got an answer for Rosberg then it is likely engine saving, the allocation of engines applies to all sessions.
Thanks, I could remember they changed the engine after practice but too lazy to check if they had separate engines for practice . Hamilton hasn't got as many to use as Rosberg so he's at a disadvantaged for the rest of the season ( even trying to set the pace in practice) until he gets new components.

They don't have dedicated practice engines. As the season progresses, they start using older motors for FP1 & FP2, and then swap them out for a race motor Friday night.

I think it's safe to assume that he has the engine turned down, because while Rosberg might have an edge, there is no way he's slower than Bottas & Hülkenberg.

This is pretty unlikely. The telemetry shows the speed through the corners and therefore it doesn't make sense if Hamilton is artificially increasing the laptime by going through some corners slower than he usually would, because the time differential at the other corners would be shown anyway.

Those averages are a terrible way to approximate relative race pace. Based on what I observed there must be some outliers in there.

Going by FP2 long runs, it seems this track magnifies the weaknesses of the current generation chassis. 2 second gain in pace over a 2 year span.

(motorsport.com) In a note sent to F1 teams on Saturday morning, F1 race director Charlie Whiting said: “Based upon our observations of the way in which the new kerb on the exit of Turn 12 is used, and the comments made in the meeting yesterday evening, we feel that the usable track limit at Turn 1 should be the outer edge of the kerb, i.e. the edge furthest from the track.

“The performance of any driver going beyond this point, with any part of the car, will be examined in order to establish whether or not an advantage was gained by exceeding this limit.”
I guess "going to bernie" worked. 'Outer edge of the kerb' and 'performance will be examined' :wtf: . I thought that after Verstappen Hungary farce and "firm but fair" Hamilton's chatting colleague Whiting can't embarrass himself more.

BTW "Firm but fair" what kind of childish, marketing media language is that? Ok I'll have two meters to the right and two to the left in 0,5 s of fairness and x km/h deceleration into the tightest line (off the racing line) of firmness. It's as if Red Bull's storytellers are writing FIA's excuses now.

read that because of his 2 stupid reprimands hamilton got in a position where 1 offence of exceeding track limits in practise could cost him a 10 place grid penalty !
amazing that he is so close to rosberg
to the optimist a glass is half full ; to the pessimist a glass is half empty ; to the F1 engineer the glass is twice as big as it needs to be

Should not matter for Ham. Will cost the team some money.

Regarding the hairpin: They rarely show a nice shot of a clean pass of the hairpin, but it seems to me that no one is really going for the inside apex. True?
