Seems like Ferrari was definitely running a more conservative FP1 than the other teams.

Hopefully we’ll see more representative runs in a couple of hours.

This track should suit the car well, at least in theory.

The problem with Ferrari running so conservatively, is that issues go undetected unless you turn it up. Running the PU in such an off state like this gives poor insight into the temperatures/cooling requirement, vibrations, harvesting, etc etc. There is a lot of danger in running too far off what your car is supposed to do.

Well, let’s see what FP2 brings. Still a long way to go.

Ferrari did a short longrun in the end, which looked ~3 tenths quicker than Mercedes and Alonso. But Albon was quicker than Merc as well, so hard to read much into it.

Ferrari seemed to be interested in testing the new parts (which they did with the early longish H runs) and test tire deg (which they did with by being one of the 2-3 teams to actually do long runs at the end of the FP).

Neither demands running the PU at higher modes. Not entirely sure why some see it so odd that they've run conservatively. Seeing just how different the temps will be on race time, seems rather logical.

Wacky theory - Ferrari want to put all 3 ICEs and other components in circulation so they can introduce 4th ICE and other stuff and rack up full penalty and be done with it for Leclerc. Therefore, since they don't need other components for a while, they want to spare them so they are running ultra low power modes

I'm confused by what they are expecting to achieve. On a full fuel load, the car would have to sit slightly lower still. I'm not sure that's even possible currently...

Alonso sounded pretty cautious about their chances, though. If anything, I trust his assessment more than some rumours about Stroll's trainer.
