Thanks Tarzoon.

It has been alleged that in the eighties, BMW found a novel use for this compound, What was it?

Smart.

Making the compound a gif so us people that didn't study chemistry will have great difficulty figuring it out.

Will giving away the compound give away the answer too easily via google?

It's O level chemistry, But I suppose that was a while ago for most of us. Much better to keep this thread ticking over, so here's some help.

CH4N2O. Google will tell you what it is, but what did they use it for?

The compound H2N-CO-NH2is Urea and it is used in Bluetec diesels to clean up engine emissions

I know I am one of the few here without a degree, so I need to ask. I took high school science classes, and hated chem and bio. Too bad the physics portion was basically non existent. Learning the gravity constant from uninspiring teachers didn't exactly show me the sciences as an interesting field. They made it as boring as possible, and didn't give us work that inspired tangents and thought.

That being said, thanks for coddling my unpickled mind.

There was a rumor (untrue) that BMW was scouring junkyards for seasoned blocks, as they were already pre stressed, and their 80's turbo unit was production based.

If that compound is urea, or a form of it, I remember reading something about it being related to the combustion, or to the treatment of iron blocks.

I have a relatively current Racetech or Racecar Rngineering magazine (funny how I read these religiously and am not involved in motorsport) where the BMW turbo units were spoken of in great detail. Unfortunately I am moving at the end of the month and packing has already commenced. My library is already packed :(

I feel warm and off the mark. Ironic since we are talking urea.

Giblet has it!
The story goes that the M12 was built up from used 100,000km road blocks. These would be stacked in the open air at the back of the workshop over winter where the staff (presumably just the male ones) would periodically Err.."water" them to promote some sort of stress relieving.
I did say alleged But it's such a good story I refuse to belive that there weren't Bavarians unziping their lederhosen to help the racing effort.

<Edit> Sorry WB. I have no doubt that you are correct, but this is an F1 board.

Yeah but was I right about it assisting in production and power increase, or was it to treat the blocks?

Sorry, I missed that bit out. I've edited my last reply for a little more explanation.

While I am glad I somehow got it, the old life block thing was just a rumor but one based in fact.

The rumor started, IIRC, when BMW F1 mechanics were seen scouring the wreckers for old blocks, but it was not to find ones that were 'seasoned' as the rumor goes but to find ones that had not blown up yet. by not being blown up, there was better chance of the block being fit for the high levels of TC being applied, and having no casting flaws.

The BMW turbo unit was a strange bird in how much production engine there was. Imagine a team nowadays using a cast iron block from a road car?

I think a lot of it has to do with the mystique that surrounded this engine. so much power from a little 1.5 four pot? Needed an explanation just short of witchcraft.
I like to think it was an early form of protest against Bernie.

As it happens the M12 is one of my favourite sounding F1 lumps, none of that Ferrari v12 sophistication. this one sounds like an angry hornet with a chainsaw.

There were a surprising number of performance engines with humble beginnings the 2.0 Cossie was built up from the venerable Pinto four pot. And of course there is the one alluded to in my avatar.

Hopefully I am doing it right now.....this is unrelated to my previous question.

This Italian effort tried to qualify. What is the car/team?

There's a word for my last reply, and that word is wrong...

Try again.

De Tomaso.

And because I looked it up this time, The car was 801 and the year 1962

If this was a quiz show, the big red buzzer would have gone honk on your first answer, and then moved on to the next contestant :)

Kidding aside the ca in question was a De Tomaso 801. It only attempted to qualify one race, and failed.

You see, when a bloke who calls himself "Cooper-Climax" sees an early sixties Formula one car. He gets all exited, Thinks "This is my Era!!" and shoots his mouth off. Only a little later he'll stop, think, worry, and finally look something up.

OK, Question:

In 1983, Alain Prost scored 6 points for second place at Brands Hatch. How many did Keke Rosberg get for his win there? and Why?
